Description

In the'drawing- EPHRAIM D. WEAEHERBEE, or WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
Laarsratent No. 113.603, 1aed Apel 11, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN BQTT-LE-FASTENINGS...
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part -cui thesame.
To all whom it may concerne Be it known that I, EPHRAIM D. WEATHnRBEE,-of the city and county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cork-Fasteners for Bottles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the same, vreference being had to `the accompanying drawing which forms a part'of this specification, =in vwhich-v l l Fignre 1 represents aside view offmy improved cork-tastener;
Figure'2 represents a Figure '3 "represents a straightened out.
To 'enable those skilled in the art* to which my in'- vention belongs to make and use theame, I will prooeed to describe it more in detail.
The natureof myinvention consists-in certain improvements in 'cork-fasteners, as hereinafter described.
view of the-I 'collar `when The parts marked A indicate the neck ofthe bottle; VB indicates the cork;.
C; thef--Wil'e'ffastener provided wivith-a loop or stop, D; and
E indicates the collar for securing the fastener C t0 the neck of the bottle.
l The collar E is made of sheet metal, and is formed asshown in fig. 3, the metal'being cut away, as'shown at a a, so as to form earpieces, cc, in which are open' ingsto receive the ends of the fastener-wire O.
The collar is secured tothe bottle-'neck A bypasscated in Iig. 2, 'and thus holds the collar in place.
The top part of thefastening-wire C is made in front View ofthe same; and' thereof are Vbent inward at d so as t0 fit around the swell of the bott1e-head and 'pass under the collar. The extremities m o f the wir-e0 are turned directly -outward in a horizontalposition and passed through the openings in the ear-pieces c, thus forming pivots,
upon which the fastener() can be swung back when 'it is desired .to release the cork.
When the collar E is secured around the neck of the bottle the earpieces c spread outward and allow sufdcient space for the wire of the fastener O between thecollar and the bottle-neck; and when thefastener 'C is sprung backthe wire-passes down into the de- 'pressions a, as indicated byvdotted lines in fig. `1, so that it can he swung back freely to a horizontal posi` tion, Without binding or straining upon the collar E. The loopor stop D strikes against the side of the bottle and =prevents the iastener from being swung back far enough to tear out the earpieces c, thus ren dering the parts much more durable than iu the ordinary fasteuings.
'It will be observed that the collar E may be adj usted to any size of bottle-neck with equal facility.
Having described 'my improved cork-fastener for bottles.
What 4I clairntherein as new and of my invention,
and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y The combination with the wire fastener C, provided with a loop or stop, D, of the adjustable collar E, formed with ear-pieces c and depressionsa, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. EPHRAIM D.- WEATHERBEE.
