FRIEND A. RUSS, OF GREENWICH, AND JOHN B. RUSS, OF SHELTON, CONNECTICUT.
LOOP AND BUTTON CLASP.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
Application tiled January 31, 1908. Serial No. 413,570.
To all whom 'it lmay concern:
Be it known that we, FRIEND A. RUSS, residing at Greenwich, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, and JOHN B. RUSS, residinr in Shelton, in the count of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, oth citizens of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Loop andv Button Clasps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to loop and button clasps and its object is to provide a loop member to which a button carrying tab of minimum length may be attached without resorting to the expedient of sewing or stitching.
'With this and other objects in view our invention consists in the details of construction and manner of operation more fully described in the following description and accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to corresponding parts.
In the drawings: Figure l is a front View of the clasp showing a fragmentary portion of the supporting strap partly broken away; Fig. 2. a longitudinal section of Fig. 1, and F ig. 3, a longitudinal section of the loop member shown in Figs. 1 and 2 before the tab is attached.
Our device generally consists of a loop member A. a supporting strap or webbing B and a tab C carrying the button D, all of the parts being shown enlarged for the purpose of clearness. The loop member A is made out of sheet metal blanked and struck up to form the loop proper l having the usual elongated button opening contracted at its lower extremity to embrace the neck of the button D. Mounted on the upper extremity of the loop 1 is the base 2 made in skeleton form its upper extremities being connected by the attaching bar 3 around which passes the supporting strap B. Bridging the base 2 between the loop l and the attaching bar 3 is a flat narrow bar 4 having its lower projectinv side bent rearwardly at an angle to form die outwardly projecting lip 5 having transversely disposed edge 6 which is adapted to be folded back on the bar 4 to gri and confine the end of the tab C. All of t e parts of the loop member A, with the exception of the liat ar 4 and its projecting lip 5, have their face portions struck uop to give the necessary body and wearer so that the strength to the frame, and at the same time to enable the loop member to present the skeleton like and ornamental a pearance of a heavy metal orwire device ridged by a narrow, fiat and countersunk sheet metal art. p The tab C has a stud or button D mounted on one extremity and has its other extremity c conined and compressed between the lip 5 and the bar L To assemble the tab and loop member the latter is placed in a press suitably adapted for this purpose so that the lip 5 projects upwardly. The extremity of the ta is then passed over the base until it Vstrikes the bottom of the lip which acts as a guide or stop. The lip is then pressed or swaged down by the press across the surface of the tab compressing and pinching tha same tightly between the lip and the corresponding portion of the bar 4; thus the tab is gripped across its extremity between two flat gripping surfaces without beine' pierced, cut or weakened at this point. when the loop is drawn'over the button to fasten a garment or to e'ect other claspin action, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. the tab is drawn taut ovegg,` the straight edge 6 of the lip, which edofe not only acts as a rigid support to keep flic tab uniformly spread, but also by its frictional en agement or binding action relieves the c enched extremity, to a greater or less de ee, of any strain or pull tending towards displacement. B mounting the tab in this manner the so ca led rustless effect is produced, that is, the tape and supporting strap are interposed between the metal loop and the rments or bodyloftthe oop is preventedfrom being exposed to moisture due t6 peLSPiration.
Having now described our invention what we claim and desire to, protect by Letters Patent is:
In a loop and button clasp the combination with a tab having a button mounted on one extremity, of a sheet metal loop member provided with an opening for the passage the head of said hjutton having its lower portion contracted tb embrace the neck of said button, a skeleton base mounted on said loop member above said opening havin@ its upper extremities connecte by an attacliing member adapted to be carried by a su porting strap or webbing, and a flat bar iiridging said base between said attaching member and bum.; upenlng, the Said bar being pro- 'vdcf' with :m integral lip folded back on the mm1' sida 0.1i' said bar tu grip the free end of Said mb, xvhlrcby when the neck of the button isa ombrzwed by the contrartml p01- linn ma fh@ imttun Opening the Suid Tub is; fh'nvun mut and lwld uniforn'lly Spread by 'Lim edge n? Said Hp.
