Description

' E. .c. BLAKE-SLEE;
Lamp Reflector.

EDWARD O. BLAKESLEE, OF \VATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE BENE- DlCl AND BURHAM MANUFACTURING COMPANY.
Letters Patent No. concaflmz May 18, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT 11v LAMP-REFLECTORS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD O. BLAKESLEE, (assignor to the Benedict and Burnham Manufacturing Company,) of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven, Connecticu'hhave invented, made, and applied to use, a new and useful Lamp-Reflector; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same,,relerence being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters ofreference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a front view of my lamp-reflector.
Figure 2 is a top view of the same.
Figure 3 is a view of the same, showing it applied to the chimney of alamp.
1n the drawings, like parts of the invention are pointed'out by the same letters of reference. lhe nature of the present invention consists in the construction, as more fully hereinafter set forth, of an improved reflector, and the means of attaching the saine, to be used in conjunction with lamps burning hydrocarbon-oils.
The object of the invention is the production of a reflector that can be readily used upon chimneys of different sizes, while provision is also made for the contraction and expansion of the ring or hand supporting the reflector.
To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, 1 will describe its construction and operation.
A shows a band, formed of thin metal, and made of any desired length, which band A has a portion of it bent at or about its centre, so as to project beyond the main body of the metal, and form a support for the reflector O, which reflector C may he soldered or secured to the band A in any convenient way.
The forward ends of this band A are connected together by means of the helical spring B, one end of this spring being fastened to one endof the band A,
while its opposite end is attached to the opposite end of the band A.
0 shows the reflector, made of a circular plate of metal, convexed at or about its centre, the interior surface of which, or that standing directly behindthe flame, may be silvered, or highly polished, that it may answer the desired purpose.
1) shows a chimney to which the reflector has been applied, by passing the band A over the smaller (in this case) portion of the chimney, and moving it down upon the same, until the proper position for the reflector to occupy is reached.
It will readily be seen that by-thns constructing the reflector, and the means to support it, it can, by the expansion of the helical spring B, be applied, or adjusted to chimneys varying in size, and that the spring B also allows the band A to contract or expand as the chimney becomes cool or hot.
While I have shown a reflector made in a circular form, I do not wish to be understood as intending to confine myself to such form of reflector, as I am well aware that the form of reflector may be varied without departing from the object of my invention, which, as already stated, is the construction of a reflector adjustable to different-sized chimneys, and in allowing the band encircling the chimney, and supporting the reflector, to contract and expand, as may be necessary.
I distinctly disclaim the device patented by H. W. Hayden, April 14, 1863.
Having. thus described my invention,
What is claimed as new, is
The combination of a band, A, helical spring, B, and reflector-,0, constructed and operating substantially as described, for the purposes set forth.
, EDWARD O. BLAKESLEE.
