Description

A. B. HENDRYX. Lamp Shade.
No; 91,130. Patented June 8, I869.
I v 1, W
N PETERS, Photo-Lilhomphar, wamm m. n. c.
Kindred gettin A. B. HENDRYX, OF ANS'ONIA, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 91,130, dated June 8, 1869.
IIWPROVEMEN'I' IN LAMP-SHADES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it moi/y concern Be it known that I, A. B. HENDRYX, of Ansonia,
' in the county of New Haven, and State of- Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement inLamp-Shade; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and-the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which. said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
'are brought together, the form of the'shade will be conical, the lower meeting ends, at the lower edge, pivotedtogether, while the other end is left free to slide, one over the other, and united by a spring, which contracts the upper edge, but allows of its expansion, as occasion may require.
In order to the clear understanding of my invention, I will fully describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
From a sheet of suitable metal, I out a segment,A, of a size proportionate to the shade to be produced, and punch the two ends at the outer edge, as at a, and leave a projection, d, upon the-upper edge, near one end. Then bring the two ends together, as in fig. 2, placing a rivet through the perforations at a, securing it so that the two parts will turn on the said rivet, one upon the other. Then fold the projection cl down over the other part, as seen in figs. 2 and 3, so as to allow the upper edges to slide, one upon the other, so as to expand or contract the upper edge of the shade. I then, in any convenient manner, fix a spring, f, to the two ends, as seen in fig. 3, so that the contraction of the spring draws the two ends together, so as to contract to the size of the upper edge of the shade, and allow of its expansion, so as to accommodate the shade to different sizes of chimneys.
The inner edge of the segment may be provided with points, 0, to bear against the chimney, if desired.
. I do not wish to be understood as broadly claiming a shade formed from a segment, so as to be contracted or expanded as to its circumference, as such is not new.
Having fully described my invention,
What I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A lamp-shade formed from a segment, pivoted at the lower edge, and the upper edge constructed so as to slide, one part upon the other, and provided with the spring f, for the purpose of adjusting the shade, substantially in the manner set forth.
. A. B. HENDRYX.
