IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-SHADES.

TO ALL WHOMIT. MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, D. W. BASHORE, of Palmyra, Lebanon county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements iuLamp-Shades; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are suflicient to enable any person sliillcd in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvementswithout further invention or experiment.
The nature of my invention and improvements consists in providing a shade with a reflecting surface on the inner side, but having its sloping side out through or separate, so that the size or diameter of the shade may be varied to adapt the size of the top opening to chimneys of different sizes, and to different parts of the same chimney, according to the height at which it may be thought desirable to place it; also in making holes, notches, or openings in or through the shade, where it touches or comes near to the chimney, to allow the air to pass through freely, and keep the shade and chimney from becoming excessively heato l.-
.The accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, show a perspective view of my improved shade, made of paper, tin, sheet metal, or other suitable material, and out through or separate on the front side, so that the part A laps over and covers, to a greater or less extent, the part B, the one part moving or sliding upon the other, so that the size or diameter of the top opening, C, may be varied, to adapt it to the size of the part of the chimney it is required to fit.
To' keep the two parts in contact or together, I cut on the edges of each, or fasten upon them, lugs or projecting pieces of, sheet metal, and bend them over to clasp the edge of the other part, as seen at D, and when the one part is drawn or lapped over the other to the. required extent, it may be secured by a pin or screw, projecting from one partfland fitting into holes made at short intervals in the other, or by other convenient springs, catch, or fastening.
At or near the edge of the opening C, I make notches, holes, or openings, in or through the shade, to allow currents of air to pass up, and keep the shade and chimney from becomingexccssively heated. Openings for this purpose are shown in the drawing at E.
' Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Anadjustable shade or lamp-shade, constructed and arranged substantially as described.
2. In combination with a lamp-shade, constructed as described, I claim the openings in-the same, at or near where it comes in contact with the chimney, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
