Letters Patent No. 95,795, dated October 12, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAST-METAL CHIMNEY-CAPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern-.-
sylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cast-Metal Covers for Flues; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which' Figure l is a side view of the device, illustrating my'iuvention.
Figure 2 is a top or plan view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the-several figures. The subject of my invention is a simple article of manufacture, consisting'of a cast metallic cover for flues, constructed of a roof or arch open at both ends, and a base, which are formed together, whereby the snow, rain, dirt, and dust are prevented from passing down the chimney, owing to the roof forming a canopy over the chimney, and the slanting base forbidding the lodgenient of water.
In the drawings-- A represents the base-plate, which is constructed of cast-metal, of such dimensions that'its sides shall project over the sides of the chimney, as seen in fig. 1.
A central opening, b, is made in the plate, and is somewhat smaller than the internal face of the chimney to which it is applied.
The upper face of the plate is made slanting in the direction of each side.
13 is a roof or canopy, which is cast with the plate H. In the present case it is arched-shape, but may he conical or tapering. It is open at both ends, which project over the opening in theplate A.
It will be seen that when the cover or cap is applied to a chimney, there is free passage forthe heated matters which ascend the chimney. I
This passage or draught is increased, owing to the canopy being open at both ends, whereby the atmosphere assists in creating a vacuum in the chimney. Snow, rain, dust, and the like, cannot find an entrance into the chimney, either through the canopy, or on or under the plate A.
r The slanting roof prevents lodgenient of the rain or snow, while the canopy B more than covers the opening 1) in the base, so that my invention will accomplish the purposes for which it is intended.
In consequence of the opening 7) being smaller than the opening in the chimney, there is a contraction in the flue, which causes a deflection of the heat, as illustrated by the arrows, fig. 1, whereby the draught of the chimney is greatly increased.
My invention is simple and practical.
I am aware that cowls have been applied to chimneys, and therefore disclaim them; but having thus described my invention,
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture, the cast metallic cover, constructed as herein described, that is to say, with an arch, B, open at both ends, and overhanging the chimney-opening, and the slant roof at projecting beyond the sides of .the chimney, and the two parts operated together as herein. described for the purpose specified.
I To the above specification of my invention, I have signed my name, this 20th day of January, 1869, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
