StovepipeyDamper.
No. 88,744. Patented Aprii 6, 1869.
N. PETERS. rmwmu n hv, Washington 11. 5;
H. J; SAYERS, OF SALINApPENN-SYLVANIA. Letters Patent No. 88,744, dated A ril 6, 1869.
STOVE-PIPE DAMPER.
The Echedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making put of the some To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, H. J. SAYEBs, of Salina, in the county of Venango, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Stove Dampers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1, of the drawings, is a side view of my device, and t Figure 2 is a sectional view thereof.
My invention relates to that class of devices by which the. draught of a stove, or other similar heating-apparatus, may be increased or diminished at will, and the object is to provide more simple and efificient means for that purpose than have heretofore been devised.
. The letter A, of the drawings, represents the ordinary joint of stove-pipe. leading from the stove, constructed with an opening therein on the lower side, marked 0. .This jointof stove-pipe has raised shoulders, as shown at d, which serve not only to hold the next joint attached thereto in its proper place, but also as guides and supports for the sleeve H, next mentioned.
The letter H represents a sleeve of sheet-iron of sufiicient length, to fit closely between the sholilders c of the-stove-pipe, and of sufficient diameter tofit closely around the stove-pipe, and yet move thereon with ease.
I also make an opening in one side of this sleeve, corresponding in all respects with the opening 0 of the stove-pipe.
0n the side of this sleeve, opposite the opening thereon, I affix a handle, marked h, by means of which the sleeve is moved aroundthe stove-pipe at the will of the operator. V
My damper is operated as follows, namely:
To lessen the draught of the stove, I adjust the openthe principle of admittingair into the annular flange of the stove below the stove-pipe, buteven in that case it is accomplished througha series of small openings extending around the flange, which must all be oper-' ated simultaneously, and hencethe draught is forced to the centre of the stove-pipe instead of the side, asv in my invention.
By forcing the heated air to the centre of the stovepipe, a great part of the heat thereof passes to the chimney, and is lost, while by my device the heated air is forced against the side of the stove-pipe, and from thence to the apartment.
I do not claim, broadly, the introduction. of cold air to the heated air after the same has left the stove, for, as I have observed, that devicejs not new; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the sleeve H, with its handle it and aperture, as described, with a stove-pipe having flanches'd and aperture 0, arranged in such manner that the fianches of the stove-pipe shall form guides to regulate the movements of said sleeve in the manner and for the purposes herein specified.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
i H. J. SAYERS.
