COWL FOR CHIMNEY-TOPS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1907.
Application filed April 13,1906. Se NO- 311,427.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JOHN \VILLIAM KAY- SER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Madison, Dane county, State of I/Visconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oowls for OhimneyTops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvement in cowls for chimney tops, especially adapted to be constructed of cement of other similar material for the purpose of increasing the draft of the chimney, and also for the purpose of preventing downward drafts in the chimney. And the object of my improvement is to provide a cowl which may be firmly and securely erected on the top of a chimney of any size, of a durable material, which when erected will become substantially a part of the chimney and will improve the looks thereof, rather than detract therefrom, and which will effectually prevent the wind or currents or air from forcing downward into a chimney, and which will convert all currents of air and wind into draft producers instead of draft retarders. I reach these results by the device shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1. is a perspective view of the cowl as erected on a chimney. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one section of the cowl.
Like figures and like letters refer to the same parts in the several drawings.
A is a section of the cowl composed of the constituent elements of the draft producer of the cowl. The completed cowl consisting merely of successive sections, A, A, A, A, located one above the other, and separated from each other, as shown, by the post, B, and with the top section A closed entirely at the top by the insertion of the re movable cap, O, when desired.
In Figs. 1. and 2 the part A comprises a flat portion 1 with the opening, 3, in the center, the opening being the same size as the chimney flue. 2 is a raised portion or head of the section A constructed at the edge of, and extending entirely around the opening, 3, and at right-angles to the portion, 1, for the purpose of deflecting the currents of air out of the chimney which would otherwise go down the chimney. The letters B indicate the post or blocks ofany desired shape or size which unite the different sections, A, into one complete cowl.
In Fig. 1 the removable cap, O, prevents any direct downward draft from entering the chimney, and being easily removable, permits the cleaning of the chimney as readily as though no cowl was attached thereto; 4 indicates the flue of the chimney, and shows the course of the draft up the chimney.
The cowl operates as follows :No matter at what angle the drafts or currents of air or wind strike the chimney, whether upward or downward, or straight down, the portion A in its successive series prevents the currents from retarding the draft in the chimney, and converts them into effective draft producers by effectually changing their course so as to create a suction in and around the chimney top, upward and out of the chimney.
What I claim as my invention, and seek to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. A cowl for chimney tops composed of concrete, comprising a series of horizontally disposed plates open at their centers and each provided with an upwardly projecting integral flange around the edges of said openings, posts interposed between said plates and located adjacent the corners thereof, and a removable closed plate or cover fitting over the open center of the uppermost plate.
2. The combination with a chimney of an open centered concrete base section projecting into the chimney, and a cowl supported on said base composed of concrete, comprising a series of horizontally disposed plates open at their centers and each provided with an upwardly projecting integral flange around the edges of said openings, posts interposed between said plates and base and located adjacent the corners thereof,-and a removable closed plate or cover fitting over the open center of the uppermost plate.
JOHN WILLIAM KAYSER.
