THEODORE J. STEEN, OF OAKLAND, NEBRASKA.
CHIMNEY CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,918, dated February 24, 1885.
Application filed June 18, 1884.
To a. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE J. STEEN, of Oakland, in the county of Burt and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Chimney-Gap, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved chimneycap, which is very effective, is held securely on the chimney, and can be fastened readily and easily.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chimney provided with my improved cap. Fig. 2is a cross sect-ional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional plan view of one corner. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal elevation of a modification of the same, parts being broken out, and others shown in section.
The cap is constructed with four upright corner bars, B, which have their lower ends tapered and bent outward or from each other, and have their upper ends bent to fit against the under side of a peaked hood, A, to which the upper bent ends of the bars B are riveted. Below the hood A one or more rectangular deflecting-plates, O, are secured on the bars B, which plates are inclined'outward and clownward from the top to the bottom edge, the upper edge of each plate or deflector being flush with the bottom edge of the deflector next above it. The bottom deflecting-plate G has a downwardly-projecting flange, G, on its bottom edge, which flange fits closely on the chimney E. The deflectingplates 0 have diagonal parts F formed at the corners at the upper edges, and the parts F are riveted to the bars B, which are placed diagonally at the corners of the opening in the chimney. The bars B are faced down into the opening in the chimney until the top edge of the bottom deflecting-plate O rests on the top of the chimney E, and the flange O rests against the top course of brick of the chimney. The lower ends of (No model.)
the bars B are pressed firmly against the inner sides of the chimney, and thus hold the cap in place on the chimney. The flange 0 holds the bricks of the top course together.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4. the bars B are secured on the outer surfaces of the hood and deflecting-plates at the middle of the sides and ends. The bars B are bent to rest for a short distance on the outer surfaces of the deflector-plates O, and then extend outward and upward to the next defleeting-plate O, and have their upper ends riveted to the inner surface of the hood. The bars B are provided with longitudinal slots N in those part-s that rest against the bevels of the hood and deflecting-plates, and bolts N are passed through the hood and deflecting-plates, and the said slots are drawn up tight. Thus the parts of the cap can be adjusted when on the chimney. The lower ends of the bars B are forked, and are made to have more or less spring tension. The cap is placed on the chimney in such a manner that the prongs rest against the outer surface of the chimney E. The sides and ends of the hood A and the plates 0 are curved, as shown in Fig. 2, or are beveled, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
I am aware that a chimney-top has been composed of a series of rectangular sections having inclined sides and open tops and bottoms,a roofed-shaped top, and bails for holding the said sections and top apart to form smokepassages. The lower section was provided with bent fastening-bars for securing the cap to a chimney. I do not claim such construe tion as of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- In a chimney-cap, the combination, with the bars B, having their upper ends bent, of the hood A, riveted to the upper ends of the bars, and the deflecting-plates 0, having the corners beveled and riveted to the bars B, substantially as herein shown and described.
