Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1915.
Application filed July 16, 1914. Serial No. 851,283.
1' 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. HOGAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Gloversville, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invent ed certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Cowls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to chimney cowls and it has for its object the provision of novel means for preventing down drafts in chimneys and furthermore the invention has for its object the production of a draft regardless of the direction of the wind with relation to the chimney.
A further object of this invention is to provide a deflecting slab or plate in certain relation to a body portion adapted to rest on top of a chimney, the said body portion having a crown ring supported in such relation thereto that a space is formed between the upper edge of the body and the lower edge of the crown ring for the passage of air, and the body is provided with means for retaining the deflecting plate clear of the upper edge of said body.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a cowl having the characteristics above enumerated, preferably constructed of concrete material so that it will not deteriorate or corrode as is the case with metallic structures designed to accomplish the results of this invention.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote correspond ing parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a view in elevation showing the upper end of a chimney with the cowl applied thereto; Fig. 2 illustrates a vertical sectional view; Fig. 3 illus trates a top plan view; and Fig. 4 illustrates a plan view of the cowl with the deflecting slab omitted.
In these drawings 5 denotes the body and 6 a base flange therefor, which latter is adapted to rest on the chimney and to be secured thereto by mortar or the like. The body is shown in the drawing as rectangular in plan, but it is obvious that it may be of any configuration to conform to the contour of the chimney.
A series of brackets 'or lugs 7 are integral with and externally of the body and their upper surfaces act as supports for the crown ring 8 which crown ring is larger than the body so that when it is supported by the brackets 7, a space is formed between the crown ring and body for the passage of air.
Interiorly of the body is a series of lugs or brackets 9 extending a distance above the upper edge of the body and constitutes sup ports for the deflecting slab 10, the edges of which extend beyond the inner surfaces of the body but a sufficient distance above the upper edge of the body to form air spaces so that a draft may be created in the chimney. The upper surface of the deflecting slab is preferably slightly oval so that it will deflect water and prevent its gaining access to the interior of the chimney, where as the under surface thereof is tapered upwardly from the center to the edges forming a deflecting surface for the air and products of combustion issuing from the chimney. The deflecting slab is preferably removable, although it may be secured to the lugs when in a plastic state, or may be secured by cement or mortar.
I claim- In a chimney cowl, a non-metallic composition hollow body adapted to be secured to the top of a chimney and having brackets projecting outwardly, said brackets having of the body, a crown ring surrounding the any drip therefrom is discharged exterior upper edge of the body and supported on the thereof. 1 brackets externally of the body, and a de- In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my fleeting plate of substantially lens form in signature in the presence of two Witnesses. section having a curved top and an up- CHARLES H.
