To all whom it may 0011061 12 Be it known that I, GEORGE M. MURRAY, citizen of the United States, residing at West Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Hoods, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in chimney hoods, and as its primary ob ect contemplates a hood comprising a plurality of connected hood sections so arranged relatively to each other as to form when assemblcd, a body, square in cross section at its base, and converging therefrom to form at its top, a circular or tubular extension to which one or more pipe sections might be attached; the base or square-end portion of the hood being partially closed so as to form or provide a shoulder directly engageable with the chimney top and a flange or exten' sion adapted for snug or fitting engagement with the chimney interior; the engagement between the said extension and the said chimney serving as the retaining means whereby the hood is effectually held in place.

As a further object, I aim to provide a hood, the sections of which are cast and connected, each section being a duplicate of the other to in this manner reduce the manufac turing cost of the hood to the minimum.

The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the ac companying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claim which is appended hereto and forms a part of this application.

In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of a hood constructed in accordance with the present invention, the same being shown in place upon a chimney top; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the hood; Fig. 3 is a bottom plan View; and Fig. 4; is a' plan View of a modified type of hood section.

ferred embodiment, consisting of a plurality of duplicate hood sections designated 3. Each hood section 3 is or may be cast from the same pattern and when fastened together, as shown to advantage in Figs. 1 to 8 inclusive, form the complete hood consisting of abody portion at, the base of which is square in cross section, the said body converging upwardly in such a novel and peculiar manner as to form at its top a circular or tubular extension 5 of a size approximately equal to the size of the opening in the chimney top. If desired, one or a plurality of pipe sections (not shown) may be fastened to the tubular extension 5, the engaging pipe section being held in place when so fastened through the medium of a band 6 encircling the extension or hood top. The enlarged or diverged end of the hood is partially closed as indicated at 7, thereby form ing a shoulder, the outer surface of which is directly engageable with the chimney top. If necessary, an opening 8 may be formed in the shoulder 7 through which the cement or other plastic composition employed to maintain the hood in proper place may extend. The said hood is cemented upon the chimney top as shown at 9 in Fig. 1. A base extension 10 is made integral with that portion 7 of the hood above referred to, the said extension being shaped to conform to the configuration of the chimney interior into which it extends and with which it is adapted for snug engagement, said extension with the shoulder 7 above mentioned serving as the retaining means whereby the hood is held in proper place. As above stated, the several hood sections 3 are each cast from the said pattern and when assembled, are adapted for overlapping engagement one with the other. Each section is provided with lugs or tongues 11, the

tongues of one section underlapping the adjacent longitudinal edge of the engaging section, to which engaging section it is bolted as indicated at 12 to in this manner efiectually hold the several hood sections in place.

Referring now to the modification shown in Fig. 4, the hood section therein illustrated is of the sheet metal type, the said section being stamped out and bent into shape so an entirety, the-hood, the latter, in its prewith the accompanying drawings it will be;

noted that the complete hood may be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost; that the shape of the hood is such as to insure perfect draft yet prevent overhead currents of air from entering the chimney by blowing down the same; and that by the provision of the band 6, the obnoxious and ungainly fastening means now generally employed for attaching the pipe sections may be completely dispensed with.

In reduction to practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the'preferred embodiment, is the most efficient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary,

I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in detalls of construction,

1 proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claim.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

A chimney hood comprising a plurality of duplicate hood sections, each hood section consisting of a blank form cut to converge toward each end from a point ad acent one end, the several sections being arranged vertically, edge to edge, whereby to form the completed hood, apertured locking tongues formed upon one of the longitudinal edges of each section, the said tongues underlapping the adjacent hood section in assembling the hood to aline said apertures with corresponding apertures formed in-the hoodsec tion next adjacent thereto, means fitting. the alined apertures to lock the several sections together, each section being inwardly bent at its'widest point to form a shoulder for engagement with the chimney top, an extension formed by again bending. each section downwardly to fit within the chimney to thus form a retaining means for the hood at the base thereof and a means whereby the several sections are held together and a band arranged to embrace the hood at lts opposlte end to provide an additional fastening means, substantially as described.
