CHIMNEY-CAP.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 24, 1914.
Application filed August 6, 1912. Serial No. 713,673.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PIETRO RINDONE, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Chimney-Cap, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a cap for chimneys and the main object of the invention is to provide a cap which will maintain the natural draft of the chimney under all conditions of weather so that the draft will not be interfered with by rain or wind.
A. further object of the invention is to provide for removability and replaceability of the several parts of the chimney cap.
Other objects of the invention will. appear hereinafter.
The accompanying drawing illustrates an embodiment of the invention and referring thereto :-Figure 1 is a vertical section of the chimney. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line na -00 in Fig. 1, with a portion of the supporting cage for the deflectors broken away.
1 designates the chimney on which the cap is placed, said chimney having the flue 1 which is generally rectangular in cross section. A cage 2 is placed on said chimney, said cage having a bottom plate 3 which is rectangular in shape and provided with a central opening 4 registering with the chim ney fine, and said cage being provided with vertical bars 5 at the respective corners for supporting a top plate or frame 6 which is provided with a central opening 6. An inner deflector member 7 is provided having at its top an outwardly extending horizontal flange 9 adapted to rest on the top plate 6 of the cage, said deflector also having a clowntapering portion 10 formed as an inverted pyramid which extends downwardly within the cage 2 and into the chimney flue 1, the faces of said pyramid being opposite the respective lateral openings 12 in the cage between the vertical bars 5. A hood member 14 is provided having upwardly converging side walls 15 formed as faces of a truncated rectangular pyramid and said hood member being provided with inwardly extending ribs 16 which rest on the bottom plate 3 of the cage to support the hood member in position. The top member 18 is provided with a bottom plate 19 resting on top of the deflector member 7 and of such dimension as to leave a slot or opening 20 between said plate 19 and the outer walls of the hood member 14. Said top member 18 may be provided with upwardly extending flanges 18 for supporting any desired ornamental devices 21, including for example, a weather vane 22. The chimney 1, cap 2 and deflector members 7 and 14 and top member 18 are preferably of terracotta or similar material, each of said parts being molded in a single, separate piece, so that the entire construction can be quickly and readily assembled or taken apart.
The operation is as follows :The hot gases ascending from the fine 1' are deflected by the inverted pyramid 10 and pass outwardly through the openings 12 and up within the hood 14, escaping finally through the space 20 at the top of the hood. Any rain which falls on the cap cannot find its way into the chimney as it is deflected by the top member 18 and the hood 14, and any wind blowing on the chimney cap is deflected by the hood 14 so that it does not interfere with the natural draft, while at the same time the course of the hotgases from the fine is almost directly upward so that the deflectors do not interfere with the intensity of the draft.
VYhat I claim is In combination with a chimney, a cap therefor comprising a cage member having a bottom plate adapted to rest on the chimney and having a central passage, said cage member being provided with vertical bars at the respective corners and with a top plate having a central opening, an inner deflector member in the form of an inverted pyramid extending downwardly within said cage member and having a horizontal flange resting on the top plate of the cage member, a hood member having its walls converging upwardly from bottom to top in the form of a truncated pyramid and provided with in- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set wardly extending ribs resting on the bottom my hand at Los Angeles, California, this plate of the cage member, and a top member 1st day of August 1912.
resting on said inner deflector member and PIETRO RINDONE. having a horizontal flange spaced from the In presence of- Walls of the hood member to form an outlet ARTHUR P. KNIGHT,
space at the top of the hood member. MARY E. BLASDEL.
