UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CALAHAN G. OARPER, OF AMMA, WEST VIRGINIA.
SPARK-ARRESTER FOR CHIMNEYS OR FLUES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,932, dated November 29, 1898.
Application filed May 31, 1898.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALAHAN C. CARPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Amma, in the county of Roane and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Spark-Arrester for Chimneys or Flues, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in spark-arresters for chimneys and flues.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device adapted to be readily applied to an ordinary chimney or flue at the top thereof and capable of effectually preventing sparks from issuing from a chimney and falling upon the surrounding roofs or other inflammable material and setting fire to the same.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a spark-arrester constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a chimney. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the device detached. Fig. 3 is a sectiona view of the same.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the draw- 1ngs.
1 designates a spark-arrester comprising a rectangular screen 2, a rectangular frame 3, supporting the screen, and triangular plates or flanges 4, extending outward from the sides of the same and adapted to secure the device to a chimney, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings. The screen 2 is constructed of Woven wire, and the frame 3,which is attached to the edges of the screen, has its sides composed of upper and lower bars or strips of metal, and these strips, which are preferably constructed of sheet metal, are connected by suitable fastening devices, which serve to attach the frame to the screen and also to connect the plates or flanges 4 with the same.
The plates or flanges 4, which are triangular, as shown, are arranged between'the upper and lower bars or strips of the rectangular supporting-frame 3, and in applying the device to a chimney it is arranged upon the top thereof, as shown in Fig. 1, and the triangular Serial No. 682,181. (No model.)
plates or flanges, which extend from all the sides of the frame, are bent downward against the chimney to retain the screen thereon, and they may be attached to the sides of the chimney by any suitable fastening devices.
The sides of the frame 3 have their ends overlapped, as shown, and any desired form of ornaments may be mounted on the frame at the corners, so that the device and the chimney will present an ornamental appearance.
Theinvention has the following advantages: The spark-arrester, which is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, is adapted to be readily applied to a chimney or flue, and while it is capable of effectually preventing sparks from issuing from a chimney and endangering the surrounding roofs or other inflammable material it does not in any manner interfere with the draft of the chimney.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
What I claim is- 1. A spark-arrester for chimneys and fines, comprising a screen, metal flanges extending from the sides of the screen and adapted to be bent downward against the sides of the chimney, and a frame composed of upper and lower strips or bars arranged at the edges of the screen and the adjacent edges of the flanges and connecting the same, substantially as described.
2. A spark-arrester for chimneys and flues, comprising a screen, triangular flanges extending outward from the sides of the screen, constructed of metal and adapted to be bent downward against the sides of a chimney, and the rectangular frame extending around the edges of the screen, and composed of upper and lower bars or strips arranged on the upper and lower faces of the screen and the flanges and securing the latter to the former, substantially. as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CALAHAN G. OARPER.
