LAMP ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1911.
Application filed December 31, 1910. Serial No. 600,221.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO LEHMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of aco, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Lamp Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to lamp attachments, and has for an object to provide a device of the class described, for preventing lamp explosions, to serve as a means for heating liquids over a lamp and to prevent the cracking and breaking of lamp chimneys.
For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a perforated cylinder adapted to fit over a lamp chimney, supporting means secured to the cylinder and adapted to rest on the chimney, a top plate removably engaging the supporting members, the upper end of the cylinder being provided with integral flanges constituting a rest for cooking vessels.
A large number of lamp chimneys are broken by insects, which, attracted by the light, are singed and fall into the chimney and are ignited, thus causing a flame tending to crack the chimney. In my device I provide means for preventing any insects from falling into the chimney. A large number of lamp explosions are caused by a back draft in the chimney, and it is to eliminate this back draft that I provide a top plate and other means on my device. Furthermore, it is often desired to heat liquids and the like, in a short time, without resort ing to the ordinary range or stove, and for this reason I have provided suitable means for conveniently cooking various substances over a lamp.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device with the top plate removed and shown alongside the device; Fig. 2 is a partial side elevation of a lamp with my device attached thereto, and shown in sectional elevation to disclose the underlying structure, a suitable cooking vessel being disposed on top of my attachment; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a blank form adapted to constitute the cylinder of my invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I employ a perforated cylinder 10, preferably formed from a blank 11, shown in Fig. 3. The upper edges 12 of the cylinder are bent outwardly to form flanges 13, constituting a rest for supporting a cook ing vessel 14:. Diagonally disposed supporting members 15 are secured to the cylinder 10, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the said members preferably have their under sides provided with a series of serrations for engagement with lamp globes of different diameters. Removably disposed on the supporting members 15 is a perforated top plate 16. The cylinder 10 is provided with tongues 17 adapted to engage the slots 18, as will be readily understood and the ends of the supporting members 15 are passed through the slots 20 in the cylinder and the outer ends 19 of these members are turned over into engagement with the outside of the cylinder thereby holding the supporting members securely in position thereon, as shown particularly in Fig. 1.
Although, for the purpose of describing my lamp attachment, I have shown a particular construction, it will be understood that the scope of my invention is defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A device of the class described, comprising a cylinder provided with a plurality of perforations and having a serrated upper edge, projecting lugs carried by the upper edge which are adapted to support a vessel, diagonal supporting members within the cylinder for engagement with the side of the cylinder and provided with serrations at different distances from the center whereby the said members may engage lamp chimneys of different dimensions, together with a perforated top plate resting on the said supporting members.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a cylinder provided with a plurality of perforations and also provided with a plurality of slots, the upper edge of the cylinder being notched in order to form a support for a vessel, supporting members within the cylinder having their end portions in engagement with the said slot, the bottom portion of the supporting members being formed with serrations adapted to rest on a lamp chimney, together with a perforated top plate resting on the said supporting members.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a cylinder provided with a plurality of perforations and also prorided with a plurality of slots, the upper portion of the cylinder being notched whereby a plurality of projections are formed each projection having a lug extending therefrom whereby a suitable support for a vessel is formed, diagonal supporting members within the cylinder for engagement with the top of a chimney, the said supporting members being provided with end portions in engagement with the said slots in the cylinder, the outer ends of these end portions being bent into engagement with the outside of the cylinder whereby a rigid structure is obtained.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HUGO LE l-IMANN.
