WILLIAM H. STEPHENSON, on BLUFFTON, INDIA A.
DETACHABLE SAFETY-CAP FOR LA'M P CHllVlN-EYS OR-GLOBES.
SPECIFICATION arming part of Letters Patent No. 592,922, dated November 2, 1897, Application filed February 19, 1897. Serial No. 624,167. (No model.)
To all whom zit may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. STEPHEN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bluffton, in the county of Wells and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Safety- Oaps for Lamp Chimneys or Globes; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same.
This invention has relation to improvements in devices applicable to lamp chimneys and globes; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of a detachable cap adapted to be applied to the upper portion or top of a lamp-chimney or similar article, all as will be hereinafter fully explained.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of my device. -Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view of the cap, and Fig. 4 is a top view of the plate.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates an ordinary lamp chimney or globe, and B designates the cap therefor.
0 indicates a plate having upwardly-extended arms or lugs a a, which pass through slots a a in the cap, whereby the plate is suspended and secured to said cap. The arms a a, after being passed through the slots, are bent at right angles to the main arm, thus combining the two pieces, and when the cap is removed the under plate goes with it. This cap is perforated on the top,as shown at h, and is provided with an annular downwardly-projecting flange 0, having its edge scalloped, one or more of which may be bent inwardly to securethe cap to the top of the chimney, as shown at d The cap rests upon the top ofthe chimney and supports the inner plate, which latter is preferably constructed of sheet metal, having a central opening 6, whereby the ventilation is given to the flame in connection with the perforations in the cap. The inner suspended plate above the flame or light, located within the edge of the top of the chimney, is
radiates the heat within the chimney, thus equalizing the expansion and contraction of the chimney or globe, avoiding breakage, as well as to prevent igniting of any combustible material which may be above the chimney.
It will thus be seen a that my safety device in the form of a perforated cap-not only equalizes the heat within the chimney or globe, but prevents the flame from flickering and excludes flies, insects, &c., from the interior of the chimney, and in use the cap can rest upon the chimney without being fastened thereto by the depending scallops.
A device as herein shown and described is simple in construction, durable, ornamental, aswell as cheap to manufacture.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--' A cap for lamp-chimneys consisting of the inner depending plate provided with one or more openings therein and upwardly-extended arms in combination with the cap having the perforations and flange and holding-flngers and slots adapted to receive the arms of the lower plate whereby the two parts are attached together, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
