RUDOLPH HOFFMAN, OF KANKAKEE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO SEARS, ROEBUCK AND 00., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
OIL-HEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kankakee, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to heating stoves of the type known as oil heaters. Such a stove comprises a base, an oil tank, and a shell secured to the base'and surrounding the tank.
The object of this invention is to produce improved means for uniting the base and the shell and for supporting the tank in central position with reference to the base and the shell.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of an oil heater embodying the features of my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are fragmental horizontal sectional views. Fig. lis a perspective view of a securing, centering and supporting member.
The annular base 1 comprises supporting legs 2. On the base is an annular upwardly extending flange 3 that fits within the cylindrical shell 4:. The base and the shell are secured together by means of a suitable number of members 5. These members may be formed of sheet metal as herein shown. In the construction herein illustrated, each member consists of two plates 6 integrally united by means of a web 7. At the lower portion of each plate 6 is a lug 8 that underlies the annular upwardly extending flange 3. Each plate 6 is recessed as at 9 to accommodate the flange 3. Above the recess 9 each plate 6 is formed to provide a tongue 10, there being shoulders 11 above and below said tongue. These tongues are arranged to extend through slots 12 in the shell 4. and be bent into contact with the outer side of said shell, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Said tongues thus serve to secure the members 5 to the shell 4, with the shoulders 11 in contact with the inner side of the shell. Preferably the upper surface of the lugs 8 is inclined so that the base 1, the shell 4, and the members 5 shall be drawn tightly together when the tongues 10 are inserted through the slots 12 and clenched. The upper inner corner of each member 5 is preferably beveled or cut away as indicated at 13 to cooperate with the rounded lower edge of the oil font 14 and thus guide the oil font into place. The font is provided near its upper portion with an annular outwardly extending flange 15 adapted to rest upon the upper edges of the plates 6.
It will be seen that the members 5 serve to secure the base 1 and the shell 4: together and also provide means for supporting the oil font and for spacing the oil font away from the base and the shell so as to provide an air space around the font.
I claim as my invention:
1. An oil heater having, in combination, an annular base having an annular upwardly extending flange, a cylindrical shell into the lower end of which said flange extends, means for securing the base and the shell together comprising a plurality of members formed from sheet metal, each member consisting of two vertical plates connected at one edge by an integral web, a lug on the opposite edge of each plate at the lower end of the plate, said lug having an inclined upper surface to engage the lower side of the base, each plate being recessed to accommodate said flange, each plate being formed above said recess to rovide a tongue and a. shoulder, there being an opening for said tongue in the shell above said flange, said tongue extending through the opening in the shell and being clenched upon the outer side of the shell with said shoulder in contact with the inner side of the shell, and an oil font adapted to fit between said members and provided with an outwardly extending portion adapted to rest upon said members.
2. An oil heater having, in combination, an annular base, a cylindrical shell, means for securing the base and the shell together comprising a plurality of members each having a lug at the lower end thereof engaging the base and a pair of tongues, the shell being apertured to receive said tongues so that they may be clenched upon the outer side of the shell,-and an oil font adapted to fit between said members and provided with an outwardly extending ortion adapted to rest upon said members.
8. An oil heater having, in combination, an annular base, a cylindrical shell, means for securing the base and the shell together comprising a plurality of members formed from sheet metal, each member consisting of two vertical plates connected at one edge by an integral web, a lug on the opposite edge of each plate at the lower end of the plate,
said lug engaging the base, each plate having a tongue and a shoulder, said shell being.
apertured to receive said tongue so that the tongues may be clenched upon the outer side of the shell with said shoulder in contact with the inner side of the shell, and an oil metal, each member consisting of twovertical. plates connected at one edge by an integral web, a lug on the opposite edge of each plate at the lower'end of the plate,'said lug having an inclined upper surface to engage the lower side of the base, each plate beingrecessed to accommodate said flange, each plate being formed above said recess to provide a, tongue and a shoulder, said shell being apertured to receive said tongue so that the tongue may be clenched upon the outer side of the shell with said shoulder in contact with the inner side of the shell.
In an oil heater, an annular base, a cylindrical shell, and means for securing the base and the shell together comprising a plurality of members each having a lug at the lower end thereofengaging the base, a
pair of tongues and a shoulder, said shell being apertured to receive said tongues so that they may be clenched upon the outer side of the shell with said shoulder in contact with the inner side of the shell.
6. In an oil heater, an annular base having an annular upwardly extending flange, a cylindrical shell into the lower: end of which said flange extends, and means for securing the base and the shell together comprising a plurality of members each having a lug engaging the base and'a part adapted to be secured to the shell above the base;
7. In an oil heater, a base, an annular shell rising from the base, and means for securing said parts together comprising a member having a part adapted to operatively engage with the base below the shell and a tongue adaptedto be securedflto the shell above the base, said tongue being bent into engagement with theshell. ',8. In, an oilheater, a base, an annular shell supported upon the base, an oil font, and means for supporting the oil font comprising a plurality of members each having a tongue, said shell being apert-ured so that the tongue may be entered therethrough and bent into engagementtherewith, said font. having a portion adapted to rest upon said members.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
RUDOLPH HOFFMAN.
