, Be it known that I, LUCY G. Cmrrrs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Deflector for Oil- Burners; and I hereby declare the following to be a full clear,ancl exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of-reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to deflectors for burners of the class particularly adapted for use in connection with the burning of kerosene or other hydrocarbon oils of low gravity for illuminating purposes.
The object. of my invention is to provide an improved form of deflector of this type, which is simple and economical in its construction, cheap of manufacture, ellicicnt in its operation, and capable of being easily and quickly applied to or removed from a burner.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the base of a burn-er, 2 the wick-tube rising therefrom, and 3 the burner dome, which is mounted in the usual or any suitable manner on the base 1 over the tube 2 and has the usual flame slot or opening 4 in its top in register with the wick, but longer and broader than such tube.
Disposed within the dome 3 at opposite ends of the wick-tube 2 are deflector members 5, 5, which serve to deflect air to prevent it to a considerable extent from rising within the dome at the ends of the wick-tube. The deflectors 5 are shown in the present in stance as each comprising a stamped sheet metal member having a central portion a,
which is inwardly spaced from the associated dome side to restrict to a considerable extent the space at the associated end of the Wicktube, and is preferably substantially parallel to such end, as shown. Flanges I) extend outwardly from the vertical edges of the central portion a of a deflector and fit against the dome side, and each flange is shown as having a securing car 0 projecting therefrom through a registering aperture in the dome wall. The upper ends of the portions a of the deflectors are formed with outwardly flaring depressions or recesses (Z, which fit into the ends of the dome slot 4 and practically prevent the upward passage of air to the outer sides of the deflectors, or between them and the dome walls. The top of the wick-tube terminates adjacent the lower ends of the depressions (l to permit a broadening of a flame due to its ends flaring outwardly within such depressions, as shown in Fig. 5.
\Vhile, with the use of my improved de flector, the major portion of the air which would otherwise rise at the ends of the wick-tube is deflected from such ends and caused to rise at the sides of the tube to feed and flatten the flame, the restricted spaces between the deflectors and tube ends permit a sufficient quantity of air to rise at such points to thoroughly support combustion at the flame ends whereby to whiten and free the flame of carbon black. The deflectors become highly heated in use and serve to heat the air rising at the ends of the flame to adapt it to more effectually support combustion.
It is found in practice that this form of deflector is more efficient in its operation and flame whitening and broadening results than are deflectors which entirely envelop the upper portion of the wick-tube, as it is not necessary to provide means in cooperation with the dome for deflecting the air against the sides of a flame but only to deflect a portion of the air from the ends of a flame to permit such ends to roll outwardly from the wick ends through the flame slot of the dome. Care must be taken, however, not to entirely restrict the upward flow of air at the ends of the wick-tube as this would impair the thorough and efficient combustion at the flame ends, which is very important in securing satisfactory results.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. In a burner of the class described, a
. wick-tube, a dome having a flame slot in register with said tube, and individual deflectors secured to the interior of the dome wall at the ends of the wick-tube, said deflectors having their upper ends centrally depressed with the depressed portions forming outwardly inclining grooves and projecting through the ends of the flame slot.
2. In a burner of the class described, a Wick-tube, a dome having a flame slot in register with said tube, and individual deflectors secured to the dome wall at the ends of the wick-tube, said deflectors having parts hugging the dome wall to prevent the passage of air between them and the dome wall and having their upper ends centrally depressed with the depressed portions forming outwardly inclining grooves and projecting through the ends of the flame slot.
3. In a burner of the class described, a Wick-tube, a dome having a flame opening in register With such tube, and a deflector secured within the dome to the wall thereof adjacent each end of said slot and having a portion spaced from the associated end of the wick-tube and substantially parallel therewith and a portion at its upper end which is flared outwardly and seats in the flame slot.

In a burner of the class described, a wick-tube, a dome having a flame slotin register with such tube, and deflector members disposed within the dome at opposite ends of the wick-tube, said members com-- prising a central portion disposed to restrict the air space between the ends of the tube and the adjacent dome walls, and having their upper end portions flaring outwardly in register wtih the slot ends, and flanges projecting outwardly from the side edges of said central portions and having securing ears penetrating the dome wall.
