F. A. CURTIS.
DEFLEGTOB FOR OIL BURNERS.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 29, 1913.

@M, amwwm UNITED STATES 1 FREDERIC A. cancers, or TOLEDO, OHIO, AssIGNon TO L fiLLA G. BUTLER, or TOLEDO, OHIO,
DEFLECTOB. FOR OIL-BURNERS;
To all whom it may] concern Be it known that I, FREDERIC A. CURTIS, a citizen of the'United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Defiector'for Oil-Burners; and I. do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description oftheinvention, such as will enable others skilled illuminating purposes, but is not restricted to suchas it may be employed in any con nection for which it may be adapted or appropriate. a
-The object of my invention is the provision of a'single piece deflector ofthe character described, which is simple and inexpensive in its manufacture and construction,
is easily and quickly applied to a burner dome, and is so fashioned as to direct'the airsupply to the burner flame where it is most needed, whereby a large white flame is created and the black carbon deposits on the chimney are entirely overcome or reduced to a minimum, thusenhancing the efliciency,
practicability and commercial value of deflectors of this nature.
.The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of. embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is asectional view of a burner 1 equipped with my invention taken on the dotted line w re in Fig. 2. Fig.2 is a central vertical section on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1, with a part of the deflector broken away.
Fig. 3is a perspective view of the deflector;
Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are side, top and end views thereof, respectively, and Fig. 7 is a'plan of the blank from which the deflector is formed.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the base of a kerosene-oil burner of customary form, 2 the wick-tube rising there- Specification of Letters Patent.

from, and 3 the burner dome, which is mountedin theusual or any suitable manner on thebase l and has the customary flame slot or opening 1 in its top in register with thewick-tube. The deflector-embodying my invention is preferably stamped in a single piece from sheet-metal, and'comprisesthe two opposing substantially semi-circularsides 5, 5, and.
the parts 6, 6, which latter connect the sides at the ends of their'top or straight'edges 7 tially in parallel planes, the distance between. the sides being greater than the width of the wick-tube 2, and-the end parts 6, 6 being disposed without; opposite ends of the tube top, as shown in Fig. 1, to permit. the flame rising from the wick to pass freely upward through the deflector opening.
The deflector blank or, disk is preferably of substantially the same diameter as the cross-sectional area of the interior of the dome 8" at, the base of the flame slot l'therein, to permit the deflector, when mounted within the d0me, to have its ends fit closely against the dome wall at the respective bases prevented from passing between the outer edges of the parts 6, 6 and the dome wall. The deflector is secured within the burner dome, w.in' the,presentjinstance, by ears 10,
one ofwhiclr projects outward from the outer edge of each part Gcentrally thereof mounted within the dome,,has its top edge disposed'above thev upper end of the wicktube. in'spaced relation thereto, as shown in Fig. 2.
It is found in practicethat by making the bottom edges of the deflector sides 5, 5 of convexed form, or gradually restricted in depth from their central portions to the end 90. of the flame slot 4c therein, so that the flamefeeding air, which rises within the'dome,
parts 6, 6, the upward flow of air through the deflector to teedthe flame increases in, volume outward from the center thereof so that the greatest volume envelops the end portions of the flame, where it is most needed, and effects a thorough combustion of the gases and carbon particles at such points. The efliciency of the deflector is further enhanced by notching the inner-edge of each part 6 at its ends, as shown at 11 cept in so far as such limitations are specitied in the claims, as numerous changes may be made within the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by; Letters Patent, is, i
1. The combination with an oil burner having a dome and a wick tubewithin'the dome, of a deflector mounted within the dome and having opposingdepending sides which are gradually restricted in depth from near the centers totheends thereof, the top portion of the'deflector being'above the wick tube.
2. The combination with an oil burner having a dome and a wick tube, of a deflector disposed within the dome and having opposing sides, the bottom edges of which substantially describe ares ofcircles, the top portion of the deflector being disposed above the wickjtube.
3. The combination with an 'oil burner having a dome and a wick tube, of a'defiec; tor disposed within the dome and having opposing sides, the top edges of which are substantially level and the bottom edges thereoi of arcuate form with the arcs terininating at their ends adjacentto the level oi':' the top edges, the top portion of the 'deflector being disposed above the wick tube.
A. The combination with *an oil burner having a dome and an inclosed wick tube, or a deflector encompassing the upper 1 portion of thewvicktube in spaced relation thereto, with its top portionabove the wick tube, said deflector having opposing sides, the bottom and end edges of each of which are parts of a common arc;
5. The combination with an oil burner having a dome and an inclosed wick tube, of a deflector mounted within the dome with its upper portion above the wick tube, said deflector having end and side portions forming a flame opening, the sides being connected by and depending from the .end portions.
6. The combination with an oil burner having a dome and a wick tube disposed therein, of a deflector mounted within the dome with its top :portion above the wick tact 'therewith at its ends above the wick tube, said deflector having opposing sides with substantially straight upper edges and convexed lower edges, and end portions con necting the sides in "substantially the plane of the top edges thereof.
'8. A de'flector of the class described, hav:
ing opposing sidesand encbportions connectingthe sides adjacent to the ends of their top edges "and being notched at the ends of their inner side edges.
'9. Adeflector forming an air and flame opening and having the end walls of such opening notched at the end portions thereof.
10A deflector blank of circular form having a diametrically disposed opening therein with the end walls of such'opening notched at the ends thereof.
11. A deflector blank ofcircular disk-like form'having a diametricallydisposed opening with parallel side walls and inwardly protuberant end walls, and ears projecting in opposed relation from the side edge'or' the blank in longitudinal register with said opening.
a In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed'iny --name to this specification 1n the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
