0. B. SIMS. MEAT SMOKERJ No. 434,052. Patented Aug. 12, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. SIMS, OF MOOONNELL, TENNESSEE.
MEAT-SMOKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,052, dated August 12, 1890.
Application filed May 6,18 89. Serial No. 309,797. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. SIMS, a citi zen of the United. States, residing at McConnell, in the county of Obion and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Meat- Smoker, of which the following is a specifica tion.
My invention relates to improvements in meat-smokers; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the spark-arresting caps.
The furnace A is of the usual or any preferred construction and is supported on the legs B, and has an open top. A removable cover G is supported on the furnace and is provided with the horizontal flanges D, which rest on the upper edges of the walls of the furnace, and thereby support the cover, and with the depending flanges E, which engage the inner faces of the walls of the furnace, so as to prevent the cover moving from its position. The cover is provided with a series of perforations or openings F, and over these openings I arrange the spark-arresting caps G, which are substantially conical in form, and are supported a slight distance above the openings by the short standards II. The cover is provided on its upper side with the vertical walls I, which extend a suitable distance above the caps G, and on the upper edges of these walls I arrange the distributer J, which is substantially pyramidal in form, and is provided with a series of openings K, through which the smoke escapes and which serve to direct it to the various parts of the dry-house. The distributer is provided at its edges with the horizontal flanges L, which rest on the upper edges of the walls I, and with the depending flange M, which engage the outer faces of the said walls I, so as to prevent the distributer slipping from its place.
The construction and arrangement of the several parts of my device being thus made known, the operation of the same will, it is thought, be readily understood. A fire is built in the furnace, and the products of combustion pass through the openings in the cover, when the sparks will be arrested by the caps G, and the smoke will be allowed to escape through the distributer and pass to the different parts of the dry-house.
My improved device is very simple in its construction and is efficient in its operation. The several parts can be readily detached, when so desired, and access to the interior for the purposes of cleaning and repairing the same can be easily had. The spark-arresting caps effectually prevent the sparks passing to the meat, so as to burn or heat the same and thereby render it unfit for use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A meat-smoker consisting, essentially, of a furnace, a cover removably supported on the walls of the furnace and having a series of openings, and a series of spark-arresting caps secured on the cover and arranged one over each of the openings therein, as set forth.
2. A meat-smoker consisting, essentially, of a furnace, a cover removably supported on the walls of the furnace and having a series of openings and provided with vertical walls at its edges, a series of spark-arresting caps secured to the cover and arranged one over each of the openings, and the distributer removably supported on the walls of the coverand provided with a series of openings, as set forth.
3. The improved meat-smoker herein described and shown, consisting of a furnace A, having an open top, a cover O, having an angular flange D,resting on the upper edges of the walls of the furnace, and the depending flanges E, engaging the inner faces of said walls, the said cover being provided with a series of openings F, a series of spark-arresting caps secured on the cover and ar ranged one over each of the openings therein, the walls Ion the upper side of the cover, and the distributer J, having a series of openings K and provided with the annular flange L, resting on the upper edges of the walls I, and the depending flanges M, engaging the outer faces of the said walls, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES B. sIMs.
