MARTIN ELZAS, OF LOS ANGE LES, CALIFORNIA.
PANTALOONS-PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 8, 1908.
Application filed May 21, 1907. Serial 110,374,927.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, MARTIN ELzAs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pantaloons- Protectors, of which the following is a' specification. 7
My invention relates to a device for protecting the bottom of pantaloons against dirt and water in muddy and rainy weather, and particularly contemplates the provision of a device which remains normally open, and which may be quickly and easily closed in order to more readily attach the same to the pantaloons, or to detach it.
' My invention specifically resides in the following features of construction, arrangement and operation as will be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of my invention in the position it will assume when in use. Fig. 2 1s an elevation of the same straightened out. Fig. 3 is a cross section of the form shown in Fig. 1. similar view to Fig. 1, of my invention. the form shown in and Fig. 6 is a cross of Fig. 5.
In the practical embodiment of my invention I provide a protector constructed of a suitable material, folded to form an inner flap 1 and an outer flap 2, the bottom of the pantaloons being adapted to be received between said flaps. The protector is provided with a suitable binding 3, and is particularly designed to provide means whereby it may be quickly and easily attached to the bottom of the pantaloons in the manner shown in Figs. 1, and 4, in which the pantaloons are indicated by dotted lines.
The form shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 is constructed to encircle the entire bottom of the showing another form Fig. 5 is an elevation of Fig. 4 straightened out, section on the line 6-6 pantaloons, and to be fastened thereto by means of the ordinary ball and socket fasteners 4, arranged upon the inner flaps 1 of the protector.
In the form shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 I have shown a protector shorter than the one shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, being adapted to encircle the greater portion of the bottom of the pantaloons, especially in the rear thereof, and provided with spring hinged fasteners 5 at intervals in its length. The fasteners 5 Fig. 4 is a comprise hinged plates 6, having indented portions 7, and arranged between. the inner and outer flaps 1 and 2, respectively, while protected from direct contact with the pant-aloons by a covering 8. One of the plates 6 is provided with a substantial straight spring 9, while the other of said members is provided With a spring 10, curved at its lower end 11, said curved end 11 being adapted to lie inward between the spring 9 and its corresponding member 6 when said members 6 are forced apart, as shown in Fig. 6, to hold the flaps 1 and 2 spaced from one another, in order that the bottom be slipped between them. It will be seen that this may quickly and easily be done, after the said flaps are forced and held apart as described, and when in position, the members 6 are forced together tightly upon the material of the pantaloons, forcing the end 11 of the spring 10 out at substantially right angles to the spring 9 to hold said. members in the closed position.
Having thus fully described my invention I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a protector constructed of a suitable material having a suitable binding extending continuously about the edges thereof and being folded to embrace the inner and outer portions of the garment, of concealed fasteners therefor com rising covered hinged plates within said -fol s having engaging straight and curved s rings normally holding said plates and said folds spaced apart for the ready insertion of the garment, and adapted to hold said fasteners tightly together when the same are closed upon the garment, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a protector constructed of a suitable material folded to embrace the inner and outer portions of the garment, of fasteners therefor comprising hinged plates arranged within said folds having engaging straight and curved springs normally holding said plates and'said folds spaced apart for the ready insertion of the garment, said hinged plates having opposing indented portions forming gripping jaws, and being concealed by means of a covering of a suitable material attached to said folds to prevent direct contact of said hinged plates with the garment when closed thereon, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character dcscribml,
of the pantaloons may the combination with a protector constructed of a suitable material having a suitable binding extending continuously about the edges thereof and being folded to embrace 5 the inner and outer portions of the garment, of fasteners therefor com rising hinged plates arranged within said .olds having engaging straight and curved springs normally 0 ding said plates and said folds spaced 10 apart for the ready insertion of the garment,
said hinged plates having opposing indented portions forming gripping jaws, and being the garment when closed thereon substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
