UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
PETER PETTERSON, ALBERT DUDLY, OF MENOMINEE, MICHIGAN.
HOLDER FOR MARKING-POINTS AND ERASING MATERIAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,245, dated January 8, 1895.
7 Application filed March 21, 1394. Serial No. 504,543- (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, PETER PETTERSON and ALBERT DUDLY, citizens of the United States, and residents of Menominee, in the county of Menominee, and in the State'of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Marking-Points and Erasing Material; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention has for its object to provide a simple, economical device for holding a marking point such as a slate-pencil or chalk crayon and a sponge or other suitable erasing material, the same consisting in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 represents an elevation of our device partly in section; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the same; Fig. 3, a transverse section taken online 33 of the first figure, and Fig. 4, a similar view taken on line 4-4 of the'second figure.
Referring by letter to the drawings A represents the body portion of our device in the form of aspring-metal cylinder having a tapered lower end cut out on two sides to form clamp-jaws b, and loose on the cylinder between beads c or other suitable stops is a compressing band B for the jaws.
Retained in the cylinder by any suitable means is a spiral-spring C, and the latter being compressed by the insertion of a marking "point D between the jaws b its expansive force operates to force the point outward when said jaws are unclamped.
That portion of the cylinder farthest from the clamp-jaws is provided with bayonet slots dengaged by a pin e fast in a sleeve E loose on said cylinder, and attached to the pin are spring-jaws f for a piece of sponge F or other 1 suitable erasing material.
The spring-jaws f are preferably made by serrating the inturned ends of a strip of sheet metal and bending the latter at its center around the pin 6, a sufficient crimpof the strip on said pin insuring a permanent joint.
The sponge or other erasing material is in serted between the jaws f when the latter are in their expanded position, after which the sleeve E is retracted and turned to bring the pin 6 into the lateral portions of the bayonetslots (1 in the cylinder, whereby said jaws are cramped together and said erasing material secured in position for use, a portion of the same being drawn into aforesaid jaws. w
. By means of the construction and arrangement of parts above specified it will be seen that the marking point may be automatically fed forward as it is needed for use, and the erasive material may be readily renewed from time to time. The marking-point and erasing material being in one device, they are moreconvenient than otherwise, and we not only economize in the use of the marking material but also provide for a cleanly use of the same, especially when moist sponge is employed as the erasing material.
Having now fully described our invention, what we claim'as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A spring-metal cylinder cutout at one end to form clamp-jaws for a marking-point and provided at the other end with bayonet-slots,- a jaw-compressing ring loose on the cylinder, a sleeve also loose on said cylinder, a pin that is fast in the sleeve and engages said slots, and a strip of spring-metal that is crimped at its center on the pin and has inturned ends for gripping erasing material, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands, at Menominee,
Michigan, in the presence of two witnesses.
PETER PETTERSON. ALBERT DUDLY.
