FOUNTAIN -PEN CLIP.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Application led May 7, 1917. Serial No. 167,073.
To all lwhom z't may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANK H. MooNEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Fountain-Pen Clip; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to fountain pens, and particularly to a clip or retainer for such pens and to improved means for securing it to a fountain pen cap.
The object of my invention is the provision of a simple and eilieient clip of the class described, which is capable of being easily andA quickly secured to a fountain pen cap without the use ofrivets, retaining bands or the like, thus enhancing the practieability and commercial value of devices of this class.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichr* Figure l is a sideelevation of a fountain pen embodying my invention, with the cap and clipin central longitudinal section and with the inner cap frictionally held within the outer cap. F ig. 2 is a similar View, with the pen barrel removed and with the inner cap threaded into the outer cap. Fig. 3 is a perspective view in inverted position of the clip member embodying my invention, and Fig. et is a fragmentary sectional View of a cap and clip as they appear when assembled, the inner cap being omitted.
Referring to the drawings, l designates the barrel of a fountain pen and 2 the customary cap for fitting over the barrel and protecting the pen point carried thereby. The cap 2 is provided with the customary inner cap or plug member 3, which has a socket for receiving the pen point, and forms a shoulder within the cap 2 against which the pen point carrying end of the barrel may seat when the rel end. rihis inner cap, however, does not cap is in position on the bar.
form any part of the invention and may be omitted or used, as desired.
The clip embodying my invention comprises a lever 4 and a spring strip or linger 5, which carries the lever. The spring 5 has one end firmly secured to the inner side of the lever et lengthwise thereof by' providing the lever for a portion of its length with edge anges 6, which are turned under in embracing relation to the spring, as best shown in Fig. 3. The spring 5 extends from the article gripping end of the lever to near its center, or to the fulerum point thereof,
and then extends at a rearward angle from the lever, as at 7, to adapt it to project inward through an inclined opening 8 in the cap side. l llhe spring 5, after passing throughthe opening 8, extends toward the closed end of the cap 2 at the outer side of the cap 3 and has its free end terminating in a laterally turned spur 9, which bears at its free end against the side of the cap 2 opposed to that through which the spring projects and retains the adjoining portion of the spring against the adjacent side of the cap 2 substantially in parallelism therewith. if an inner cap is employed the spur 9 is disposed between the closed ends of the two caps.- The clamping end of the lever 4 is preferably turned laterally toward the ca 2 to form a gripping nose l0.
In assembling the parts of my invention, the lever 4 and spring 5 are first secured together in any suitable manner, as by turning the edge flanges 6 of the lever into clamping engagement with the spring, leaving the spring and lever, as shown in F ig. 3. The free end of the spring is then inserted through the opening 8 and forced rearward into the cap 2 until the angled part 7 is disposed in said opening with its bow bearing inward against the forward inclined end of the opening 8, the cap lever and Spring then bearing the relation to each other substantially as shown in the drawings. `The cap 3,'if employed, is then forced into the socket of the cap 2 at a portion of the spring 5 disposed therein and in contact at its inner end with the spur 9 of the spring. The eoaction of the end of the capv 3 withthe spring spur 9 serves to draw the spring to its proper position when side of the major been removed. A further advantage of this construction is that 'the longitudinally extending portion of the spring within the cap 2 bears laterally against t e cap 3 when inserted therein and serves to frictionally retain the two caps in assembled relation.
It is `evident that l have provided a simple and ecient means for carrying the lever 4 and attaching it in ayielding manner to apen cap and that such means is capable of being easily and quickly attached to a pen cap without the use of rivets or the like. lt is also evident that the thrust of the spring angle 7 against the forward incap clined side ofthe cap opening 8 both resists a withdrawal of the spring from said opening and resists an 'inward movement of the spring when a releasing pressure is exerted on the rear end of the lever 4.
l wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, as it is capable of numerous modications without departing from the spirit of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l l. The combination with a fountain pen cap having an opening in a side thereof, of a clip loyer, a spring carrying said lever and projecting therefrom intermediate its ends and through said opening into the interior of the cap in holding engagement therewith.
2. The combination with a fountain pen having an opening in a side thereof, of a clip lever disposed at the outer side of said ca with one end in clamping coaction therewith, a spring nger carrying said lever and projecting at an angle therefrom intermediate its ends and through said opening and having a part projecting rearwardly in the cap at one side thereof and having its free end angled and in contact with the opposite' side of the cap.
3. The combination with a fountain pen cap having an opening in a side thereof in spaced relation to its ends, of a clip theatre lever disposed at one side of said ca longitudinally thereof with one end in c amping engagement therewit a spring strip carrying said lever and projecting at an angle therefrom intermediate its ends and through said opening with its free end extending longitudinally of the cap interiorly thereof and along one side to adjacent its rear end and terminating in a laterally projecting spur in engagement at its outer end with the cap side.
d. ln a fountain pen, the combination of a cap having an opening in a side thereof, a lever extending longitudinally of said cap and having one end in clamping coaction therewith and its other end normally laterally spaced from the cap, said lever having opposite side flanges adjacent to its clamping end, a spring stri clamped to said lever lengthwise thereo by said side flanges and extending laterally from the lever intermediate its ends and through the cap opening and thence lengthwise of the cap and braced thereby against lateral movements.
5. ln a fountain pen, the combination of a cap havin@ an opening in a side thereof in spaced relation to its ends, said opening having its forward wall inclinedy longitudinally ofthe cap, a clip lever extending longitudinally of said cap disposed at one side of said cap longitudinally thereof, a spring strip having one end portion carrying said lever and projectin laterally therefrom intermediate its en s through said opening and thence toward the rear end of the cap along the side thereof in which the opening is provided and having its free end terminating in a transversely projecting spur in bracing contact with the opposite side of the cap to that in which the opening is provided, the projecting portion of said spring which projects through said opening being curved and bearing against the inclined side of the opening.
ln testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
