Application April 15, 1952, Serial No. 282,422
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a detachable cuff for trousers and has as its primary object the provision of a trousers cuff which may readily be applied to and/or detached from the leg of a pair of trousers by a person not necessarily skilled in the art of tailoring, and thus enabling such a person to cuff trousers by this method in a fraction of the time customarily required for curling trousers.
As conducive to a clearer understanding of this invention, it may be here pointed out that in ready-made clothing the trousers are now usually made with the legs of a length to accommodate normally the tallest person apt to wear trousers of a given size waistband, and that in consequence each trouser leg must be provided with a cuff which at the present time requires extensive tailoring.
An object of this invention is the provision, therefore, of a cuff normally separate from the trouser leg, and provided with snap fastening means whereby when it is desired to modify the trouser leg to a given length, the leg may be simply out 01f to the desired length and the cuff attached thereto by means of snap fasteners or other similar means, thus obviating the necessity for the above described lengthy, expensive and laborious tailoring operation and effecting a material saving of time and expense.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter and shown in the accompanying drawing wherein there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of this inventive concept.
In the drawing- Figure l is a fragmentary side elevational view partially broken away, of a trouser leg having the cuff of the instant invention applied thereto, certain concealed parts being shown in dotted lines,
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially along the line 2-2 of Figure 1, as viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows,
Figure 3 is an exploded plan view of a portion of the trouser leg and a portion of the cuif, certain parts of the latter being omitted for the sake of clarity,
Figure 4 is a plan View of the cuff in extended position.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, there is generally indicated at [B a fragment of a trouser leg of any desired length, provided with the customary conventional seam H.
A detachable cuff comprising the essential feature of the instant invention is generally indicated at 13, and comprises, as best shown in Figure 2, an outer cuff portion it having a downwardly extending inwardly reverted portion [5, from the bottom of which extends an upwardly extending reverted portion ll, the latter extending to a point adjacent the top of portion [4. The lower extremity of outer cuff portion H5 is reverted as at [3 and has extending upwardly a second inwardly turned reverted portion I 9. The upper end of portion is is sewn in any desired manner to the lower extremity of portion IT, as indicated at Zil.
Suitably secured to and extending through portion I! are the male members 2| of a series of separable fasteners, the corresponding female members 22 of which are secured in any desired manner to portion I5, whereby they are concealed from view by the outer cuff portion I t. The male portions 2! are adapted to be forced through the material of the pant leg to form openings and when they have passed through the material engage the corresponding elements to secure the cuff in related assembly with the trouser leg. The fit of the opposite parts of the separable fastener about the hole thus formed precludes fraying of the material around the edges.
From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided an improved trouser cuff which accomplishes all of the objects of this invention and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiments hereinbefore shown and described, it is understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim is:
A detachable cuff for trousers comprising an outer cuff portion, an inner cuff portion extending downwardly from the top of said outer cuif portion to a point intermediate the length thereof, a reverted inner portion extending upwardly from the bottom of said inner cuff portion to a point adjacent the top of said inner and outer cuff portion, a second reverted portion extending upwardly from the bottom of the outer cuif portion to a point adjacent the bottom of said inner cuff portion, stitching connecting said second reverted portion to the lower part of said first reverted portion, and coacting fastening means carried by adjacent sides of said inner cuff portion and said first reverted portion for connecting said cuff to a trouser leg, said fastening means comprising a separable fastener including male and female elements, the male element being adapted to extend through a trouser leg, one of said elements being attached to the downwardly extending portion of the inner cuff portion and the other to the reverted inner portion thereof.
