Description

No. 897,423. PATENTED SEPT. 1, 1908. H. G. STENBERG.
DOOR FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 5, 1908.
WITNESS'ES. I/V' Vim/1 0R.
- 121/1715 VQTTORNEK' HANS C. STENBERG, OF SHEYENNE, NORTH DAKOTA.
DOOR-FASTENER.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANS C. STENBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sheyenne, in the county of Eddy and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and use ful Door-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for so fastening doors from the inside of a room that even if a burglar should succeed in picking the door lock he can. not open the door except by such noisy violence will arouse the occupant of the room and perhaps also people in. other parts of the building.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a top view of my door fastener shown as applied to a door casing and holding a door fastened, portions of the door, door frame andcasing being shown in horizontal section near the fastener, which may be applied near or above the door lock (not shown). Fig. 2 is the upper side of Fig. 1 with the finger lever broken away at the line aa. Fig. 3 is a right hand end view of the device in Fig. 1 detached from the wood Work. Fig. 4 is a a cross section oneither line b?) or cc in Fig.
1. Fig. 5 is a modification of Fig. 4.
- Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 1 designates the frame and. 2 the casing of a door adjacent to ashut door 3.
4 is a clamp made up of two bars or members 5 and 6, each of which is guided to slide in a loop 7 of the other bar and by having at its own end a similar loop 7 sliding on the other bar. Each bar is provided with a broad sharp hook 8 adapted to engage into or back of the opposite edges of the casing, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The member 5 has its hook portion provided. with a flat finger 9 adapted to bear against the inner face of the door and thereby keep it closed.
In order to secure the device firmly to the casing, the member 5 is provided with a ratchet rack-10, and the member 6 carries on a projecting serrated lug 14 a finger lever 11, pivoted at 12 and having teeth 13 adapted to engage any of the ratchet teeth 10 according to the width of the casing. On said finger lever is pivoted at 15 a dog 16, normally held by a spring 17 in engagement with the lug 16, whose serrations it engages and thereby holds the lever in a position that causes the hooks 8 to engage firmly with the casing. I Vhen the door is to be opened the dog is Specification of Letters Patent.

pressed out of engagement with the serrated lug, the lever swung to the dotted position in Fig. 1 and the hooks 8 disengaged from the casing.
The device may be carried by traveling per sons stopping at hotels and other places where they feel unsafe that their room may be unwarrantedly opened during their sleeping hours. v
In Figs. 3 and 4: is best shown how the loop '7 of either member may be formed integral with the bar as an arm and then bent to a hook acting as a loop about the other member, but the loops may also be formed as in Fig. 5 of a separate piece of band iron. and secured to the bar by screws 18.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. Adoor fastener comprising two overlapping lnembers forming a clamp having flat, sharp hooks adapted to engage the opposite edges of a door casing, one of the members having a finger adapted to bear against the side of the door.
2. A door fastener comprising two overlapping members forming a clamp having flat, sharp hooks adapted to engage the op posite edges of a door casing, one of the members having a finger adapted to bear against the side of the door, said clamp being formed of two bars slidingly and guidingly moving on. each other, one of the bars havinga ratchet rack, the other having a serrated lug, a finger lever pivoted on said lug and having teeth engaging the rack.
3. A door fastener comprising two overlapping members forming a clamp having fiat, sharp hooks adapted to engage the opposite, edges of a door casing, one of the members having a finger adapted to bear against the side of the door, said clamp being formed of two bars slidingly and guidingly moving on each other, one of the bars having a ratchet rack, the other having a serrated lug, a finger lever pivoted on said lug and having teeth engaging the rack, and a spring pressed dog pivoted on the lever and normally engaging the serrations of the lug.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
