Be it known that I, CHARLES W. SCHREI- TER, citizen of the United States, residing at Wimbledon, in the county of Barnes and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Halters, of

which the following is a specification.

My invention pertains to halters; and it consists in the simple, strong and comfortable halter hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a halter constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail side elevation illustrating one of the right-angle eyes of the halter and the parts connected therewith. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the nose-piece, and: Fig. 4 is a detail vertical section taken through the upright portion ofthe throat latch in a plane at one side of the ring carried thereby.

Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to which:

A is the head-stall of the halter. This head-stall is preferably, though not necessarily, composed of two straps a and l), buckled together at c, and connected at'their outer ends to rings d.

B B- are cheek-pieces, formed by straps, and connected to and depending from the rings d, and C C are the right-angle eyes on the cheek-pieces at the lower ends thereof. These right-angle eyes are so denominated because two of their sides e are disposed at right-angles to each other as shown for connection to the cheekpieces B and the nosepiece D, presently described. The remaining sides f of the eyes C are curved outward as shown for the loose connection of a jawpiece E which is made of twisted chain, preferably two sections of chain connected tov gether at their rear ends through the medium of a ring g.

lt will be gathered from the foregoing that the straight sides e of the eyes C serve to hold the nose-piece D at right angles to each other, while the curved sides f of said eyes permit of free movement of the jaw-piece E and hence enable said jawiece to accommodate itself to theI jaw of t e animal so as not to cause discomfort; and it will also be gathered that the twisted chain of the jawpiece E is strong and durable, and that the Specification of Letters Patent.

This throat latch comprises a strap m connected at its ends 'to the eyes d on the head-stall, and an upright portion n interposed between and connecting said strap m and the jaw-piece E. ment of my invention the portion n of the throat-latch is made up of a ring p connected to the ring g of the aw-piece E, a pin r arranged transversely in said ring p and having heads s at its ends, and a strap t which has a bifurcated loop u straddling the ring p and receiving the pin r, and a loop o receiving the strap m, and also has its end portions w and x lapped and connected together and to the main portion y of the strap and extending from one of the loops to the other. This construction is`obviouslystrong and durable and adds greatly to thestrength and durability of the halter as a whole. It will also be noticed that by virtue of said construction the portion n is stiff and rigid with the result that it holds the jaw-piece E down in its proper position and against casual upward movement.

The manner of applying and removing my novel halter will, it is believed, be fully understood from the foregoing description of the construction.

1t will be gatheredfrom the foregoing that by virtue of the ring g being loosely arranged in and connecting the rear end links of the chain sections and the ring p and movable freely on the latter, freedom of motion is assured and the parts are saved from undue wear and strain; and it will also be gathered that the loose arrangement of the curved sides of the eyesC in the forward links of the chain sections permits full'play of the chain sections on said curved sides and in addition to rendering the halter comfortable to the horse assists in preventing undue wear and strain of the parts.

The herein described haltereonsisting essentially of a head stall, a throat latch having an upright portion and also having a ring at the lower end of the said upright portion; the said ring being arranged fore and aft of the halter, cheek pieces connected with the head stall and throat latch, a nose piece, eyes posed at right angles to each other and connected to the cheek pieces and the nose piece and also having rearwardly curved sides, a
