Description
uit
w-essaeew FRANCIS B. STEVENS, OF WEEHAWKEN, AND WILLIAM BROWN, OF HOBOKEN, NEW
JERSEY; SAID STEVENS ASSIGNOB TO SAID BROWN.
Letters Patent No. 89,514, dated Apr/il 27, 1869.
IMPROVElVm-NT IN IRON CLEAT AND CHUCK.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the ums.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANCIS B. STEVENS, of Weehawken, in the county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, and WILLIAM BROWN, of Hoboken, in the same county and State, have invented an Improved Iron Cleat and Ohook; and we do hereby declare thatv the, following is a ful] and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
An objection to the iron cleats and chocks now used, is that the oxide or rust of the iron outs or chaf'e's the rope on that part of the surface where the rope binds vwill not chafe the rope.
This metal can be either fitted into the recess, or
run, while in a melted state, into it, the recess being in that case dovetailed.
In the annexed drawings- Figure I is a longitudinal elevation of a cleat. Figure II is a transverse section, taken through the dotted line zy of Fig. I.
Figure III is a longitudinal elevation of a chock,
used for merely guiding the rope, and being formed of half the cleat shown in Fig. I.
A is one end of the iron cleat. Y B is the other end.
The recess C is shown at the end A, empty, and at the end B, filled with the soft metal or brass, D. l
E E are dovetailed corners, for holding the brass or soft metal in the recess O.
Thus the brass`- or soft metal, D, will not out or chafe the rope as it rubs against it.
We do not conne ourselves to the particular form of `cleat or chocks shown, nor to the exact position of the recess O. This recess may be made to extend over such part where the rope bears or rubs bard.
If the rope rubs only on one end, .and is not belayed over the cleat, then the half cleat shovm at Fig. III becomes a chock, which we inlay as above described.
What we claim as our invention, isl- An iron cleat or chock, inlaid with brass or soft metal, in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth and described. p
FRANCIS B. STEVENS.
f WM. BROWN.
