Description
UNITED STATES PATENT AOEEIcE.
CONRAD SEIMEL, OF GREEN POINT, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES l PRATT, OF NEW YORK CITY.
IMPROVEMENT IN lSHEET-METAL CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 81,692, dated September l, 1868.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be itknown that I, CONRAD SEIMEL, of Green Point, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Sheet- Met-al Cans; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawingsdormin g part of this specification.
The invention relates to a new and useful improvementin the con struction of sheet-metal cans.
The invention consists in a novel manner of forming or constructing the body of the can as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure l is a transverse section of the body of a sheet-metal can constructed according to my invention. a: fr, Fig. 2, shows the line of section; Fig. 2, a side view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The body of the can is composed of two pieces of metal, A A, bent each in form so as to have the sides a a at right angles with each other, the metal at the angle of the sides a a being swaged or rolled so as to form a projection, b, of semi-cylin drical form, which extends the whole length of the piece of metal. The ends of each 'piece of metal A are also swaged or rolled to form a projection, c, similar to b.
The pieces of metal B are fitted together so that the projections c of one piece of metal A may lap within or over the projections cof the other piece A, the two pieces A A forming va square body. When the two parts or pieces I claim as new 'and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The square or rectangular sheet-metal can, constructed, as described, of the two pieces A A, bent to have the sides a a at right angles to each other, and having formed at the angles the semi-cylindrical projections b, the ends of said parts a a being rolled to form projections c, lapping within and over each other, as herein described, for the purpose speciiied.
