Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN L. THOMAS, OF NEWBURG, OHIO.
IMPROVED BELT-COUPLING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 74,449, dated February 11, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. THOMAS, of Newburg, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Belt-Couplin gs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g plate of drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a front view of my improved metal belt-coupling. Fig. 2 is a section taken in the plane of the line at m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken in the line 3/ 3 Fig. 1: Fig. 4 is a view showing the mode of applying the coupling to the laps of a belt.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new and useful device for coupling pulley-belts; and the improvement consists in a metal clamp applied to both sides or ends of a lap of a belt to hold them together, whereby lacing or riveting the ends together is dispensed with, and the belt may be readily slackened or tightened Without loss of time, as required, according to the weather, or, in case of a break, can be immediately repaired.
An iron, steel, or other flat metal collar or band, a, is made of the right length to suit the width of the belt inclosed in it, and a clamping-plate, b, is fitted within the band 01, having projections c c at the corners of the ends, shouldered on the inside of the ends of the band, so that the clamping-plate shall slide freely, and allow the two ends of a belt to pass and lap over each other under it, to be secured together tightly by the three setscrews d, as shown in Fig. 3. Two clamp couplings are placed on a lap of the two ends of a belt, which may extend over each other a foot or more, to allow for changes of length, as may be required for repairs, &c., as shown in Fig. 4.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by' Letters Patent- The belt-coupling constructed as described, consisting of the rectangular metal band a,
'formed in one piece, having beveled ends, the
