Description

that
@anni N. P. LINDERGREEN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 83,070, dated October 13, 1868.-H wl IIWPROVEIVIENT IN P-ACKIN G-CAN S.
lhe Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
--QOH Packing-Gans; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof,
which will enable others skilled in theart -to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of 'this specification, in whioht Figure 1 represents a top view of my improved can with the top removed.
Figure 2 represents a view of the cover.
The nature of this invention relates to improvements in packing-cans, the object of which is to provide cans of the best form for packing, which shall at the same time be strong and durable.
It consists in constructing cans with "eight sides, and arranging the seams in the centre of four of the sides, which are materially shorter than the other sides.
It also consists in the manner of forming the seams.
I propose to make my improved cans of eight sides, in the form shownin the drawings, and to construct the sides of four sheets, and join them together in the centre of the short sides, either by a locked joint, as shown at e, or by a ribbed joint, as shown at b. I prefer, however, the ribbed joint, as it gives greater strength. They may also be made by lapping the plane surfaces together.
By reason of the construction in this-fo`rm, all or very nearly all o f the advantages, in packing or stowing, of square cans may be had, while the most objectionable feature of square cans, namely, weak corners, is avoided.
For this purpose, the sheets, forming one long side and half of two ofthe short sides, may, together with a part of the joints, be struck up in dies of suitable form.
The joints of square cans, as ordinarily constructed, project, to some extent, beyond the walls of the can, and are therefore the most liable to receive the shocks and bruises consequent upon being packed andtiansported, and are thereby more liable to damage than when constructed according to my improvement.
While I prefer to join the sides together at the centre of the short sides, I do not desire to limit myself to this particular arrangement, as they may, if
preferred, be made at the corners, or at any interinodiate point between the corners and the centre.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lettels Patent- As a new article of manufacture, an octagonal sheetmetal can, having four narrow and four wide sides, made of four sheets of metal, connected by joints, constructed and arranged as herein shown and described.
' N. P. LINDERGREEN.
