rTO WHOM IT MAY OONOERN:
Be it known that we, W. H. YOUNG and L. YOUNG, of Boston, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and. useful Revolving Trunk-Caster; and ive-do hereby declare that the following isa full and exa-ct description of tliersame, 'reference beging had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, of whieh The letter A represents the trunk; b, the metallic socket for supporting the caster-shank; c, the shank of the caster; d, its head; e, its shoulder; f, the caster or roller; g, the screw for retaining the shank in its place; and z, the metallic strip on the bottomfof the trunk. Y, i l
` The nature and use of our invention is readily understood by examining the accompanying-drawings; but in order that others may be enabled to manufacture andapply the same, we `will proceed to explain it.
Casters for heavy trunks or'boxes, as commonly made, are liable to be. broken by rough usage, but our invention will stand rough usage without breaking. It has also this advantage over any trunk-castor now in use. It is made to revolve, the advantage of which is apparent. i
We make use of asooket, Zi, as seen in figs. 1 and 2 in the drawings, iplaced in the corners .in the inside of the trunk. This is made of metal, and so formed as to befastened to the sides ofthe trunk by screws or other-A wise, thereby strengthening the trunk,` and the part holding rthe shank-ot` the caster is cylindrical, and extends below through the bottom of thel trunk and the metalliestrip or corner-piece L.
On the inside a shoulder may be used at the' bottom of the socket, `where it rests upon the bottom of the trunk, to make the same tight.
'The shank c is Vmade ofl cast or malleable iron, or any suitable metal, and its form is seen ings. 1, 2, and 3. The part below the bottom ofthe trunk is bent or curved, containing at the extremity, of course, the roll f, which is fastened in the usual way. Upon the shank, where it passes through the strip h intothe socket, is a shoulder.' The weight of-the trunk partially rests on this-shoulder. The'shank, also, as it passes into the Socket, begins to taper to the shoulder e, (see figs. 2A and 3,) where it xills the socket again, and forms the head d, resting against the upper part of the socket. v
The advantage of this form of the shank within the socket is only to save friction. As the shank plays freely in the socket, a shoulder may be used on the shank, at about the point ofthe inner surface of the bottom of the trunk, filling the socket, so that a blow upon the roll will be distributed and received upon the shoulders of the shank, the sides, and the top ofthe socket, 'and the blow, being thus distributed, the shank and socket will sustain great pressure. At the shoulder e ofthe shank a screw, g, from the outside, passes through the socket and tits closely to the shank. This keeps the shank in place, and it cannot drop out, (see iig. 2.)
rlhe shank being thusomade and confined in the socket, turns or revolves very easily in any direction the trunk orbox is to be moved. If one end oi' the t'runk is raised by the hand and dragged along, the `shank being curved and revolving, projects beyond the end of the trunk, and in whatever way the trunk is dragged, the `roll performs its work. l I
The strip It .also ali'ords great protection to the vbottom of the trunk. It helps to sustain the shank. It may decrease in thickness towards the end of the trunk, so that when the trunk is raised nearly on one end and is dragged along, it will slide more easily, and at the same time protect the bottom'oi` the trunk. This form of caster can he applied to boxes and various kinds of furniture.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The revolving-shank c, with its.l1ead,aZ, the shoulder eand the'rollerf, combined and arranged with the `socket b, the screw g, and the strip/lt, substantially in the manner and for the purpose above set forth, p
