Be it known that I, HEZEKIAII MUNROE, of Full River, in the` county of Bristol, and State of Massachusetts, have invented n. new and useful Improvement inA Fnrnitureasters; and Idohereby declaro that the following is n full, sleur, and exact description thereof, whiclrwill enable those :skilled in the nrt to make and Yuse'the salme, reference-being hadto the accompanying-drawings, forming part of this specitcotom This invention relates to an improvement in' casters for furniture, baggage-trucks, and other purposes; and it consists in combining a friction-roll with the caster-spindle, and in the manner of its arrangement and operation.` V l The drawing represents u. costei-constructed uccording to my invention, applied to the leg of n piece of furniture, the working parts being in section. 1

A represents the caster-roll.

B is the spindle, to which the roll is attached.

C is the friction-roll, which is placed in n recess in the spindle, here it freely revolves on pivots d d.

E is the shell, which is inserted into the leg, u s seen in the drawing. y l

I This shell is'made in two pnrts,or divided longitudinally, forming u. cireulnr chamber, g, nt tlievbottom end, which encloses the friction-roll, and against the inside of which `the friction-roll bears as the spindle is revoived, thus relieving the spindle of the friction produced in ordinulry casters. l

The' shell is provided with an interior flange, e, yfor-supporting the spindle by the colluv` f when the caster is raised from the iloor.

By this arrangement thespndle is made to play freely in either. direction, the possibility of binding being prevented by the friction-roll, thus greatly increasing not only the durability of theA cster,-hut saving lloors and carpets from injury.v

I-claim as new,-nnd desire to secure by Letters Patent-'- The arrangement, in `the horizontal recess formed in the'side of the spindle B, ofthe horizontal friction-,roll C, hearing against the inner surface of the chamber g, formed at the'lwer end of" the case E, said spindle being hold within the case by the flange e endshoulderf, nll constructed as described for the purpose specified.
