Description

PATENTBD JULY 14, 1908.

MATCH B0Xlv APPLICATION FILED JUNE 18. 1907.
attenua,
ARTHUR BRAND SPANGLER, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
MATCH-B 0X.
Application led June 18, 1907.
T ovali 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR BRAND SPANGLER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to match boxes, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a match box in which the matches may be delivered singly therefrom, means being provided whereby one match is always in position to be withdrawn.
Another object of the invention is to provide a match box of simple construction which. can be quickly filled with matches, and in which one match is always exposed for withdrawal.
These and 'other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a central vertical section taken through a match box made. in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a number of matches in the box, and one match being disposed in-position to be withdrawn. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3, Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the box.
Referring to thedrawing for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the body portion of the box provided with a cover 2 suitably hinged at 3, said cover being normally closed by means of a spring 4 riveted to the box, as at 5, the upper end 6 of the spring engaging a bent catch 7 secured to the cover. The front edge of the box is preferably curved, as at 8, and provided with an opening 9 near the upper end of said curved edge. The front edge wall 10 of the box is inclined and is offset at its upper edge away from the box. A pin 11 extends across the box at a point some distance from the bottom thereof. A lever 12 pivoted near one end, at 13, within the box, bears at its upper end at 14 against a column of matches, the outer one 15 of which is heldin the opening 9 in position for withdrawal. After the match 15 has been withdrawn, the next match is thrown in the same position, the pin l 1 engaging the Specification of Letters Patent.

match below its longitudinal center, and the upper end 14 of the lever throwing the matches singly in position to be withdrawn. The lower end 15ab of the lever 12 extends through an opening 16 at the lower rear corner of the box, said lower end being in position to be operated by the hand of the user for filling the box and for throwing the upper end 14 against the matches.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a match box made in accordance with my invention will hold a column of matches in position so that one match is always disposed in position for withdrawal, and as soon as one is withdrawn, another takes its place and so on until all the matches in the box have been withdrawn.
My match box is of comparatively simple construction, can bemanufactured at slight cost, and the matches can be withdrawn therefrom without reopening the cover of the box after the box has been filled.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A match box provided with an opening at one side near its upper end, an inclined front wall below said opening, a pin extending across the box below the opening, and a lever pivoted near one end near the bottom of the box with one of its ends projecting through an opening in the box, said lever being free at both ends and the longer end adapted to bear against a column of matches to hold one of them in position for withdrawal through said opening.
2. A match box comprising a body portion, a cover therefor, an inclined front wall provided with an opening above said wall, a cross pin below the opening, a lever free at both ends and pivoted near its lower end within the box, one of the ends of said lever projecting through an opening in the box and the upper end adapted to bear against the column of matches in the box to tip the matches and to present one match at the opening for withdrawal.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR BRAND SPANGLER.
