Be it known that 1, CHARLES J. ULBRIOHT, a citizen of the United States of America, re-' siding at Olifi Mine, in the county of Allegheny and Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in match-boxes, and relates more particularly to that class of matchboxes which are designed to deliver but one match at a time.

Briefly described, the invention embodies a suitable box orcasingprovided with a suitable lid or cover and having a reciprocatory match-delivering slide'in the bottom of the said box or casing. The rear end of this match-deliverin g slide protrudes through the rear end of the box or casing and is engaged by a pivoted resser-board, by means of which the match delivering slide is projected through an opening in the front end of the box or casing to deliver the match. Inclined walls or sides are placed within the box, s0 that the matches are guided down onto the match-delivering slide to be delivered.

All of the above construction, together with other details entering into my invention, will be hereinafter more specifically described and then particularly pointed out in the claims, and in describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference will be employed for indicating like parts throughout the difierent views of the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a detailperspective view of my improved match-box. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof, showing in dotted lines how the match-delivering slide is projected through the front end of the box. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional viewof the match-safe, and Fig. 4 is a detached detail per spective view of the match-delivering slide.

To put my invention into practice, I construct a box or casing, which in the present illustration is shown as being substantially rectangular in outline and embodies the sides 1, front wall or end 2, and rear wall or end 3,

side walls, and the portions of the side walls which project are provided on their inner faces with grooves to receive the edges of the lid or cover 5, which slides therein and is pref erably provided near each end on its upper faces with finger-notches 6, whereby it may he slid outward ineither direction for the purpose of giving access: to the box for filling the same. The front wall 2 is provided centrally of its width with an opening 7, so placed that the lower wall thereof is flush with the upper face of the bottom 4, and an alinin g opening 8 is provided in the rear wall 3. The opening 8 is of slightly less diameter than the opening '7,.-and placed on the bottom 4 {of the box or casing is a match-deliveringslide 9, the body which is of a length substantially equal to the length between the .Walls 2 and 3. This match-delivering slide is adapted to be projected through the front opening 7, but is ofa diameter so that it will not pass into the opening 8, its rear end nor- To the rear end of the slide is attached a rod or extension 10, which protrudes through the opening 8, which projects beyond the rear wall 3 and has a spring 11, encircling the same and connected thereto at the outer end, the inner end of the spring abutting against the wall 3. The match-delivering slide is provided from its front end to a point near the rear endin its upper face with a groove 15-to receive the matches. j

In the upper face of the bottom 4 is a recess 16, and the match-delivering slide car- A ries a pin 17 to engage in this recess and limit the outwardmovement of the slide, this pin being preferably headed, as'shown, in order to the more securely prevent thelateral movement of the slide.

To the end Walls 2 and 3 are afiixed inclined side walls 18, preferably constructed of thin sheet metal, tin, or the like, so that the ends thereof may be bent at right angles,

as'shown at 19, and securely fastened to theend walls. 7 The matches are placed in the chamber or space in the box between these inclined side walls.

To deliver the matches, the operator presses against the presserboard 12, forcing the lower end of the same toward the end wall 3, and thus causing the same to press against the rod or extension 10 of the slide 9 and project said slide forwardly through the opening 7. The lower match of the pile within the box will be within the match-receiving groove 15 of the slide, and as the slide is moved forwardly the match will be carried therewith through the opening 7, where it may be received by the operator. When pressure on the presser-board is relieved, the spring attached to the rod 10 will return the slide to its normal position, and another match will drop into position in the match-receiving groove of the slide ready for the next operation.

While I have herein shown and described the invention in detail as it is practiced by me, yet it will be observed that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A match-box comprising side walls, end walls and a bottom secured together, said side walls and bottom extending beyond the rear end wall, and said end walls having alining openings, a match-delivering slide mounted on the bottom of the box in alinement with the openings in the end walls, a pin carried by said slide to work in a recess provided therefor in the bottom, a rod or extension on the rear end of said slide, a spring mounted on said rod or extension with its one end attached to the rod andits other end bearing against the rear end wall, and a pivoted presser-board bearing against said rod or extension for operating the slide to project the same through the front wall of the box or casing, substantially as described.

2. In a match-box, a box or casing, interior inclined side Walls attached to the end walls of the box or casing, a match-delivering slide mounted on the bottom of the box or casing and provided in its upper face with a matchreceiving groove, a headed pin carried by said slide and engaging in a recess provided therefor in the bottom of the box or casing, an extension or rod carried by the rear end of the slide and projecting beyond the rear end wall of the box or casing, a spring connected to said rod or extension for holding the slide normally retracted, and a pivoted presser-board adapted when forced toward the rear end Wall of the box or casing to project the match-delivering slide through an opening provided therefor in the front wall of said box or casing, substantially as described.

3. In a match-box, a box or casing having interior inclined side Walls, end walls provided with alining openings, a match-delivering slide mounted on the bottom of the box or casing and having a pin working in a recess in said bottom, a rod or extension carried by said slide and projecting beyond the rearend wall of the box or casing, means connected to said rod or extension for holding the match-delivering slide normally retracted, and pivoted means engaging said rod or extension and adapted when pressed toward the rear end wall to project the match-delivering slide through the opening in the frontend wall, substantially as described.
