BERRY-B OX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 9, 1908.
Application filed January 26, 1907. Serial No. 354,286.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN ALwEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eureka Springs, in the county of Carroll and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Berry-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in berr boxes or the like, comprehending particularly a means for securing the parts of the box in box forming relation.
The main object of the present invention v is the provision of a simple metallic clip designed to be readily connected to one terminal of the box wall and constructed to en gage the opposite terminal of said wall, whereby the wall may be secured in box forming position.
The invention will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a berry box constructed in accordance with my invention, the preferred form of clip being A shownin use, Fig. 2 is a broken view of both terminals of the box wall immediately preceding their connection, the improved clip being shown secured to one terminal of the wall, Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a plan of the preferred form of clip.
Referring particularly to the drawings my improved securing means is designed for use with a box made up of two parts or members, a wall 1 and a bottom 2, both of which parts may be of any preferred material, and in any size or contour, it being understood that the wall is constructed in the form of an elongated strip suitably scored or lined transversely to provide for its ready folding into box forming position. In the particular instance the wall 1 is so scored as to provide sides 3 and ends 4, the respective sides and ends being connected by narrow sections 5 disposed at an angle. The respective sections 5 are formed near their lower ends with transverse slits 6 to receive the corners 7 of the bottom 2, whereby when the wall is in box forming position the bottom is firmly secured in place.
While contemplating the use of the box constructed as above described it is to be understood that I do not limit myself thereto present invention is readily adapted for cooperation with boxes of other forms and sizes.
The present invention is directed primarily to a securing clip so constructed as to permit the ready securing of the terminals of the wall 1 to maintain said Wall in box forming position.
The preferred form of clip is illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, wherein it is seen to comprise a metallic strip 8 reduced in length to one side of .the longitudinal median line to provide a section 9. The ends of the section 9 are equally spaced from the respective ends of the strip proper, so that the strip includes in effect tongues 10 projecting beyond the ends of the section 9, but in alinement with a section 11 of the strip arranged beyond the section 9.
In the use of the referred form of clip one terminal of the wall 1 is reduced in width to provide an extension 12 somewhat greater in length than the length of the section 9 of the clip. The section 9 is then folded u on the section 11, along the longitudinal medlian line of the strip and both of said sections clamped by pressure upon the projecting portion 12 of the wall terminal. The opposmg terminal of the wall 1 is, adjacent its free end, formed with edge notches 13, of a length to leave a portion of the wall between them commensurate with the length of the section 12 of the opposing terminals of the wall. The notch terminal of the Wall 1, after application of the clip, as described, is arranged against the inner surface of the section 9 of the clip, the disposition being such as to aline the notches 13 of said terminal with the tongues 10 of the clip, said tongues are then bent inwardly into the notches 13 and forced into binding engagement with the inner surface of the notch terminal of the wall. The wall terminals are thus firmly secured together in a simple and convenient manner. The engagement of the clip with the extension 12 of one wall terminal is ordinarily sufficient to secure the Wall terminals together under any ordinary uses to which the box may be subjected, but if desired the face of the section 11 overlying the extension 12 may be indented, as at 14, to force the material thereof into the material of the wall and further hold the clip against accidental dis lacement.
In the form of clip described, it is to be particularly notedthat the clip is positively secured to the free edge of one terminal of the wall, and adapted to be interlocked with the opposing terminal. The wall is thus secured in boX forming position in a convenient and simple manner, no particular tools being required for the connection so that the boxes in knockdown condition may be readily transported. into the field or packing house, and quickly assembled by the user at the articular time they are desired for use.
T e clips are designed to be constructed of such material as will permit their convenient manual operation, while at the same time providing for the firm securing of the wall terminals after application of the clip.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
The combination with a boX including a wall having overlapped terminals formed with registering notches, of a clip comprising a metallic strip formed with means to engage one wall terminal in alinement with the notch therein, the ends of the strip being adapted to register with the alined notches of the re spective of said wall terminals, said bent portion resting in the registering notches of the respective terminals.
In testimony whereof, I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERMAN ALWES.
