IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 164,164, dated J 11110 8, 1875 application filed A May 15,1875.
' OAsE B.
To all whom it may concern BeitknownthatI,J.MoaTIMERGoLDsMITH, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bale-Ties and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my bale-tie, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
This invention has relation to improvements in bale-ties, which are especially designed to rigidly unite the two ends of a strapiron binder passing around a compressed mass of any fibrous substance; and the nature of the invention consists in the arrangement and novel construction in connection with a buckle having slots with holding-lugs in each end of a strap-iron binder, having notches in each end, whereby a perfect and adjustable union of the extremities of the binder will be obtained when they are passed into the said slots and their notches passed over the lugs on the buckle, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a metallic plate, having in one end a slot, a, of rectangular form, and in the other a slot, b, the lateral edges of which form with the sep-' arating-bar 0 between these slots obtuse angles. The front bars (I of this slotted plate are sunk below its lower horizontal surface, and inwardly projecting lugs e e are formed on each end of the side bars f of the said buckle, as shown in Fig. 1, for a purpose hereinafter explained.
The under surface of that part of buckle A wherein slot 12 is cut is provided with a rectangular recess, 1', cut out of the side bars f and separating-bar c, bounding the said slot, which recess is adapted to receive the end of a strap-iron binder, B, which end is provided with notches 2' directly opposite each other upon its lateral edges. The other end of this binder is provided with notches j arranged in pairs directly opposite each other and at a suitable distance apart, for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
I use my IIIIPIO Bd tie in the following manner, to wit The end of the binder having a single pair of notches, '6, is passed into the slot 11, the said notches being passed over and engaged with lugs e and received into recess 1" upon the under side of the said plate. The binder is then passed around the bale and its free end passed through slot or in the buckle until it is snugly adjusted to the bale, when lugs e will be received into a pair of notches, 9', thus effecting a perfect and reliable tie. If the compressing power be now taken off the expansion of the bale will force the free end h of the binder up against that end thereof which is recessed into the plate, thereby looking it into place and in great measure relieving lugs e of strain. N otches j being spaced and formed on the binder at the same time as notches a, this binder is adapted to be used with compressed masses of any size, the compass of the binder being reduced by thrusting it farther through slot at under the plate and drawing it farther out to lengthen the same.-
What I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is
1. In a bale-tie, the combination, with a binder, B, having notches c in one end and spaced notches j in the other, of the plate A, having slots at b, with retaining-lugs e 0 over bars d and a recess, 7', under the body of the plate, substantially as specified.
2. The plate A having slots at b, lugs e e, and recess 1*, adapted for use, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
J. MORTIMER GOLDSMITH.
