Description

b 1. a. BATTELLE.
Cotton-Bale Ties.
N0.153,656. Patented Aug. 4,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JOHN G. BATTELLE, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALE TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,656, dated August 4, 1874; application filed April 30,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN G. BATTELLE, of Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented Improvements in Cotton-Bale Ties.
The following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawings hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification, wherein are set forth the nature and principles of the invention, by which the sameis ormay be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts thereof as are claimed as new and are desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States.
My invention relates to that class of ties which are made use of for fastening together the ends of metallic bands about cotton-bales and the nature thereof consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying plate of drawings, in which corresponding parts are illustrated by similar letters, Figure l is a view of the tie when made on the side of the hoop. Fig. 2 lllustrates the tie when the fastening is made in front.
The hoop-iron is first bent at right angles with itself about two inches from the end thereof, as shown at a. A second similar bend is then made about two inches from the first bend. Both of these bends are made as close as can be done without straining the iron. The hoop is then bent at a point midway between the said bends, in such a manner that the flat surfaces of the hoop may be riveted together, forming a loop of suitable fore used and even patented, and merely illus-- trate such fastening for the purpose of more clearly indicating my invention. I do not claim, therefore, a loop at right angles with the band, as shown in Fig. 1.
In my invention the top of the loop is bent in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the band, as shown in Fig. 2, (0,) in such a manner as to equalize the strain and allow of the end piece is being. fastened upon the front of the band.
Having thus described the construction of my'invention, Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Pate'nt- In a cotton-bale tie, the loop formed by bending the hoop twice at right angles with itself, as shown ate and b, and forming the outer part thereof in a plane perpendicular to the hoop, as shown at c, as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I
have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of March, 1874.
JOHN GORDON BATTELLE.
