Description
W. S. DAVIS.
Cotton-Bale Ties.
Patented March 10. 1874,
Zasnuu:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WATERS S. DAVIS, OF GALVESTON, TEXAS.
IMJPRQVEMENT m COTTON-BALE TIES.
" Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,423, dated March 10, 1874; application filed February 7, 1874.
CASE 13.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WATERS S. DAVIS, of Galveston, in the county of Galveston and State of Texas, have invented an Improved Bale-Tie Fastener, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists in a flattened hook having its opening in a direction corresponding with that of the edges of the band or hoop to which it is to be attached, and its bottom straight and at a right angle to the length of the band, and having a slot in its rear end, through which one end of the band is to be passed, the other end of the band, after passing around the bale, being formed into a loop for engagement with thehook.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of a band with my improved fastening attached. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the hook.
The band or hoop A is made of hoop-iron, in the usual way. The hook D is made of wrought or malleable east-iron, as maybe preferred. The hook has its sides flattened, and its opening is in a direction corresponding with that of the edges of the band, its bot- 'gagement with the hook, as shown.
tom being straight and at a right angle to the length of the band. It is attached to the band bypassing one end of the latter through a slot, 1), in the rear end, and bending it backward, as shown in Fig. 3. The remainder of the band is then passed around the bale, and its other end is formed into a loop, 0, for en- Owin to the peculiar shape of the hook, as above described, its point of engagement with the loop is in line with the point of engagement of the slot with the other end of the band, so that the strain is uniform on all parts of the hook and band.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A bale-tie fastening constructed with the elongated slot 1) at its rear end, and terminatingat its front end in a hook, in the manner as herein shown, so that the engaging point of the hook and of the slot will be in line with each other and the ends of the band, as set forth.
