IMPROVEMENT IN BA LE-Tl ES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,989, dated April 30, 1878; application filed March 2, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. GnAsn, of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Bale-Tie, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of my improved bale-tie. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line m w in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified form of bale-tie, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on line y y in Fig. 2.

My invention consists in a bale-tie formed of a strip of sheet metal, having one of its ends doubled over upon itself, the same being bent on a line drawn across the strip at an angle of forty-five degrees, so that the folded end forms a right angle with the main part of the strip. The folded-over portion of the-strip is returned upon itself, and again bentforward, forming a Ushaped loop for receiving the opposite end of the tie, which is provided with a number of oblong apertures for receiving the bent-over or right-angled end ofthe tie.
Referring to the drawing, A is a strip of metal of suitable width, thickness, and length, in one end of which there are several oblong rectangular apertures, a, whose length is a little greater than the width of the strip. The other end of the strip is folded on a line, b c, drawn across the strip at an angle of forty-tive degrees with its edges, and is bent back or returned upon itself from a line parallel with the edge of the main portion of the strip, and is again bent forward, forming the Ushaped loop d, which receives between its two branches the portion of the apertured end of the strip lying at one side of one of the apertures a.
To strengthen and stiffen the folded end the first fold may be riveted together. The end of the strip, after being folded over at right angles to itself, may be simply offset instead of being formed into a Ushaped loop.
The bale is compressed in the usual Way, and the end of the strap which projects from the main portion is introduced into one of the apertures a, and moved forward as far as possible, or until the portion of the apertured end rests in the U-shaped loop. The tie may be left in this position, or the projecting end may be bent over the face of the tie, so as to securely lock it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A bale-tie consisting of a strip of metal apertured at one end, and bent over at right angles to itself on the other end, and offset or formed into a U-shaped loop, substantially as herein shown and described.
