Description

F. CUUK.
Bale-Ties N0. 138,479. Patented May 6.1873.
FIG 4- AM, PHoTo-LmmRAFH/c ca. unmask/leis rwacssa) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERIO COOK, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,479, dated May 6, 1873; application filed April 24, 1873.
To all'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIG (3001:, of New Orleans, parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain Improve ments in Bale-Ties, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists of an improvement in the manner of fastening m'etallic bands for baling purposes by means of bending the straight end of the metallic band back on to itself so as to form a loop. I next take a piece of band-iron about four and a half to five inches long, as wide or a little wider than the band itself, and bend it into a loop. I insert this separate 100p squarely into the loop of the band, and secure it by a rivet through the four thicknesses'of iron, or by other suitable means, leaving the looped end projecting square out from the edge of the band far enough to admit the other end of the band into said loop, which can be either hooked into the loop or passed in straight, the slack drawn up and then turned under against the bale.
Referring to the drawing, Figure 1 repre sents a perspective view of the fastening. Fig. 2 is a section throughA B, and shows the end of the band hooked into the loop provided for it. Fig. 3 represents the piece of band that forms the loop D when bent double to form a single loop. Fig. 4 shows a double-looped tie or a loop each side of band 0.
O is the end of the band, to which the loop D is attached. D is the loop, into which the other end E of the band passes to complete the tie. F is a rivet. G shows a notch eutin the looped piece I), to confine the band C in place, but if well riveted the notch may be omitted. This tie can be made with the loop D projecting on each side of band C, by forming a double loop out of piece D, thus shown at Fig. 4, so that a spare loop is always ready in case of fracture or destruction of. one loop. The looped piece D may be either introduced into the bent end of the band, as shown, or the band C may remain straight, without bend ing around D, and the separate looped piece D may be simply riveted on to it.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The cotton-tie fastening, as shown and described, having a detached loop or loops, D, secured to the end of the band, for the pur-' FREDERIO COOK. Witnessed by- WM. M00. J ONES, J MoGoURT.
