Description
J. I-I.v SNY'DER.
BALE-TIE.
Patented July z5. 187e.
VUM H M M @Mm B UNITED STATES PATENT CEEIcE.
JOHN H. SNYDER, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA. Y
A IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIEIS.
Specitication forming part of Letters4 Patent No. 180,388, dated July 25, 1876; application led- July ll, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be .it known that I, JOHN H. SNYDER, of
Y Richmond, in the county of Henrico, and in Vings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon, making a part ot' this specitication.
The nature ot my invention consists in the construction and .arrangement of a bale-tie, as willbe hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my baletie with the ends ot' the strap-iron fastened therein. 14"ig.2 is a perspective view of the tie alone.
My bale-tie consists of a square or rectangular plate, A, having a slot cut a suitable distance from and parallel with one side thereof. This slot should be about the same length asthe width ol' the strap or band-iron used. The part B of the plate between this slot and the nearest edge is raised by stamping or pressing, as shown. C and D represent two tongues, also raised up from the surface of the plate on the same side as the raised part l5. ',lhese tongues are formed by cutting the plate, 'as shown, and then stamping or pressing the tongues in the desired forni. The tongues point toward each other, and are of unequal length. tongue C is formed with an incline or curve from a to b, as shown.
The inner edge of the larger The entire tic as constructed can be stamped out with suitable dies at one operation, if desired.
G is the strap or band-iron to go around the bale, one end of said band being passed over the part B, then around the inner edge, and under the same. The other end of the band is bent to form aloop, whichis irst slipped over the long` tongue O as far as it will go, when the loop can be slipped over the small tongue D, and moved over the same, bein g then held by both tongues in place.
The incline or curve a b on the large tongue.l
C causes the loop of the band to ride over the small tongue, and prevents its slipping off.
By having the tongues raised above the surface of the plate the band can be fastened with great ease, even when the tie lies tlat on the bale.
- Having thus fully1 described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The bale-tie herein described, consisting of the plate A, formed with the raised part B, and the raisedjtongues O D, of unequal length, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The plate A, formed with the raised part B, the long raised tongue C, having incline or curve a, b on its inner edge, and the short raised tongue D, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoingl have hereunto set vmy hand this 11th day of July, 1876.
JOHN H. SNYDER.
Witnesses M. L. STOWELL, WILLIAM` L. BRAMHALL.
