Be it known that I, JosnrHJ. GILGHRIST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bill- Iolders, of which the following is a specication.

My invention consists of an improvement paper money or bills, and it has for its object to provide a simple, cheap and effective binder which may be wrapped and secured around a package of bills, and will etfectually hold the package intact.

rdinarily, with the use of the usual paper strip binder commonly employed, it becomes an easy matter to extract one or more bills from the middle of the package without affecting the appearance of the package, and my invention is designed to prevent the possibility of so doing while providing an efficient binder in all other respects.

Generally stated, the device consists of a strip of suitable material, preferably ber or soft metal or other material capable of being easily manipulated and of being pressed into form, having co-acting projections and recesses, or other equivalent elements, adapted to be iixedly secured around a package of bills and to crimp or engage all the bills of the package to eectually change their normal shape. The device is also intended for use with any other articles, as packages of samples, etc., where it is desired to keep the original package intact.

In the form shown in Fig. l, the band 2 forming the binder is preferably creased transversely as at 3 to facilitate placement around the package of bills 4;, according vto the desired thickness of the package. The

ends are secured together by overlapping and cementing or otherwise as preferred, as indicated in Fig. l.l y

The vmiddle portion of oneV side of the band is recessed or cut out as at 5, while the corresponding middley portion of the other side is pressed upwardly in ridge form, as at 6.

@ne of the edge members of the binder is continuously crimped or corrugated, as at 17, acting to somewhat pinch against the side edges of the bills, while also providing a somewhat elastic construction permitting a limited expansion to the binder, if desired.

Then the band is secured around the bills, the ridge 6 presses a corresponding kink or undulation through all of the bills, the outermost ones being bowed up through the opening 5, as clearly indicated at 7 in F ig. 2. By this means all of the bills are securely held together so that no one of them can be abstracted without disarranging the others.

In Fig. 7 I show a form of binder which is corrugated in cross section as indicated at 1l, l2, providing alternating oppositely arranged co-acting rounded ridges and channels, so that when the binder is Xedly secured around the bills, the ridges will form a series of corresponding undulations across the package, effecting the desired holding action.

Fig. 8 shows a similar arrangement in which the ridges are more minute and defined, as at 13, 14, the main body 2 of the binder being substantially iiat.

The advantages of the device will be readily appreciated by bankers and all those accustomed to packing and counting money. It eifectually prevents the tampering with a package of bills containing a known amount, without breaking the binder, and will be found to be a useful and eiiicient device for the purpose intended.

Vhat I claim is:

l. A binder for paper money packages consisting of a continuous strip of suitable material having transverse inwardly projecting portions adapted to make tight binding engagement against the edges of the package, intervening longitudinally straight integral top and bottom portions provided with co-acting oppositely disposed crimping elements, and a terminal overlapping connecting portion at one end of the binder adapted to be connected with its other end to securely hold the binder together and in grip- Patented Nov. c, 1917..

2. A binder for paper money consisting of a continuous strip of suitable material having transverse inwardly projecting portions adapted to make tight binding engagament against the edges of the package, intervening longitudinally straight integral top and bottom portions provided with an inwardly projecting crimping ridge in one of said portions, and a co-acting registering opening in the other of said portions, and a terminal overlapping connecting portion at one end of the binder adapted to be connected with its other end to securely hold the binder together and in gripping engagement With the top, bottom, and one of the edges of a package of bills, substantially as set forth.
