ALONZO T. BOON, OF GALSBURG, ILLINOIS.
Lette/rs Pate-nt No. $9,015, dated April 20, 1869 antedated April 5, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lama.
To all whom lt may concern Be it known that l, ALONZO T. Boos, of the city of Galesburg, in the county of' Knox, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Steering- Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation -of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan, or top view.
Figure 2 is a side elevation.
Figure 3 is a face view in detail of helical, or scrollscrew.
"Like letters in the diiierent igures of the drawings indicate like parts.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination of two half-wheel plates and pin, with a peculiarly-constructed spring, so that thc said spring will allow the milder to yield to any sudden strain that may be exerted upon it by under currents, or the vio'- lence of the waves during a storm, or heavy sea, and thus prevent its being damaged, the said pin being used to hold the plates in the event of the spring breaking.
To enable any one skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is the rudder.
B is the post, which is constructed with a half-wheel, C', of solid plate, having an entire hub fitting over and around the top of the post, and secured thereto in a proper manner.
Fitting Vover and around the shoulder a of this plate, is another plate, C, which is held thereon by the cap b, placed on the top of the post, and attached thereto b y a pivot-screw, c, passing down into the post.
The edge of this last plate is provided with cogteeth, cl, meshing with the threads of a helical, or scroll-screw, D, attached to the end of the shaft, or roller E, of the steering-apparatus.
It is made to fit sufliciently loose around the shoulder a of the plate C', so that when held by the scrollscrew, will allow the plate O to operate freely and independently of it, and when a sudden undue pressure of water-is exerted upon the rudder, on either sidev thereof, as hereinbefore' remarked, the rudder will yield suicicntly to avoid injury thereto, and, in so doing, will necessarily cause the plate C' to press outwardly on either end of the spring, and, of course, the moment the pressure ceases, the rudder will return to its position again. (See its operation, in red lines of fig. 1.)
- The. spring F is arranged llatwise to the back edges of the plates, and attached to the centre of the hub of recourse to assistance, and at any time, if he desires,
leave the wheel, which will remain in the position where he left it, thus avoiding the necessity of fastening it before leaving it.
I contemplate using my improved steering-appara.- tus to the saine advantage on Steamers as on ships or other vessels.
Having thus fully described' my invention,
What I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination ofthe two half-wheel plates O'C,
and pin G, substantially in the manner and for the purpose as herein set forth.
2. The combination of the spring F with the plates C' C, and pin, substantially in the manner and for the purpose as herein set forth.
