NELSON WooDEURY,-0E CHELSEA, MA'ssAoHUsEr-TsAss- IGNOR To 'WILLIAM wooDBURY, 0E SAME PLAGE. e
Letters Patent No`.`80,325f, dated July 28 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN'PEN'DANTS `POB. SHEETS 0F-POREANDFT SAILS.
To ALL WHOM 1T MAYI coNoERN;
Be it known'that I, NELSON WODBURY, of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk, and Strate of Massachusetts,
have invented n new and useful iSprig-.Pendant;". and I do hereby declare rthat the following is a. full, clear,
and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, lreference being had to thc accompanying drawing, making a'part of this specification, in .which- Y l' D represents the deck of a vessel; B, the'boom ;S, the sheet; A, a spring, supported by standards secured to the deck; Rispondenti, attached to the spring A, which passesthrough an eye, E, secured to the dock, und to which the sheet is Inode fast; and H, a hook, to stop the action of the spring, if required. i
In heavy weather, aconstant succession of shocks upon the boom of e, vessel Vend the sheet iscaused `by the swinging of the boom, and the rigid attachmentfof the sheete'to thedeckand to the boom.' Such `shocl'tsj nre at times so great astoiendanger the safety ofthe rigging, spare, and sails, a'nd` always occasion much weer and strain upon thcvarious par/ts. In jibbing, and also in a heavy sea, this is especially the cese, but, even in smooth water, the strain is sucicnt to cause greet weer. By attaching the sheet to a pendant connected with a. spring, as shown in the drawing, I prevent the shock and yconsequent undue weer nndrstain ofthe part-s. .As-
in some cases the spring would not be required-for instance, in smooth water, when close-hauled-I halve provided a hook, H, which fits in the eyeof the spring where the pendant is attached, and prevents its action.
My invention consists, first, in'thecombi'naton of theeye with the pendant, which passes through it, and is connected with a. suitble spring, all properly secured ;v and, second, in the combinationof'the first part of my invention with a. stop, whichprevents-th action of tho spring. 4 l
In the drawing, the spring-pendantis represented as attached'to the fore sheet `of*n.'frJre-ond-fnft vessel,
4and the spring is placed as shown, in order that it may be clenr of the mdinmalst. Its position 'can be varied,
however, to suit the requirements of the vessels or sails to which it maybe attached, and thespring, 11nd the eye through which the pendant passes, may be fastened upon tiny desired part of tlie-hullor spurs.- When used es a. substitute for e traveller, I prefer to 'secure it tothc deck, although it mayA b c attachedvto. the vboom.V The spring may he of rubber or other suitable `ma.teri`a.l,l`nstea'd of-metal, as shown( Any` stop mitybe used in place of the hook H. i i
Having thus described my'invention,fwhat I claim es new, and desire to s'ecu'leby Letters Patent, .is-,-
The combination of a.- sp'rin'g, n. pendant, andan 'eye through which the pendant passes, or their'equivefvlents, all substantially a's andzfor the purpose specified.
' NELSON WOODBURY."
