Description

s B; WHITNEY. D Sustaining Attachment for Drfi Poles for Wagons.
Patented. Feb. 4; 1868.
W/ TNESSES.
jignitnh tatss gaunt @ffissr SAMUEL n; WHITNEY, or ICOXSAGKIE, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 74,184, dated February 4, 1868 fithe fitlzthnlr ttftttthifl in flgtsti rttrts fittest mm milking part III the same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, SAMUELWB. WHITNEY, of Coxsackie, in the county of Greene, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied: to uses. certain new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Sustaining I the Draught-Poles of Wagons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part oflthis specification, wherein Figure 1 is a plan of the said attacliment-,-nnd
Figure 2 is an elevation of the same, the axle and jaws being shown in section at the line a: on
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
The nature of my said invention consists in aplate sprlng applied below the'axle and the jaws of the pole, so that one end rests against one and the other end against the other, in combination with a suspending-loop that hangs from the bolt on which the pole moves, so that the animals will be relieved' from the weight of the pole but said pole may he raiscd or lowered at its outer end, as occasion requires, the spring yielding to the motion.
In the drawing, a represents a portion ot'pthe axle, b b the cross-head or bolster-bars, c the jaws bolted fast to the back end of the tongue-or pole d. .e is the bolt connecting the jaws c to the cross-head b, and on which bolt e the pole can turn as the outer end is raised or lowered. f is a spring, composed of two or more plates, suspended by tho'loop or hook 2' from the bolt e, and one end of said spring is beneath the axle a, the other end below the rear end of the tongue 01, or its jaws'c, so that the springf shall support, or partially support the pole, and relieve the animals.
I do not claim a. spring applied below the pole, and bolted up to thejaws or bolster, as this has been'used,
but it is liable to be broken, because the spring does not hang freely for accommodating itself to the sudden v movement of the pole, besides which the same cannot be applied to or removed from the pole with facility and rapidity.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The loop or-liook 2', hanging from the bolt 0, and sustaining the spring F, incombination with the tongne d and jaws c, as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, this 3d day of Joly, A. D. 186 7.
S. B. WHITNEY.
Witnesses:
