TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHANN A. LIBBERTZ, of Hamburg,.Ge1-many, have invented a new and improved Means oli` Detaching Boats from Davits; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming'part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved means for detachiug boats from davits, and of that class which admits of both ends of aboat being detached simultaneously bythe manipulation of a single lever by one person. The object of the invention is to obtain a simple, eilicient, and economical device for the purpose, and one which may be operated with the greatest facility. In the accompanying sheet of drawings Figure l is a plan or top View of a boat having my invention applied to it.
-Figure 2, a transverse section of the same taken in the line 2: as, iig. l.
Figure 3, a detached and enlarged vertical section of the improvement taken 1n the line y y, fig. 41.-
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents a ships boat, which may be constructed iu the usual or in any proper manner, and having a ring, B, at each endof it, through each of which rings a rope, C, passes, as shown in fig. 1. On one of the thwarts D of the boat, the central one, there is firmly bolted a metal plate, E, having two ears or lugs, FF, in
which arms, G, are pivoted, said arms projecting toward each other and over concave beds, a a, on the upper surface of the plate E. To the plate E, at a point midway between the concavebeds au, there is secured the lower end of a vertical shaft, H, the latter being allowed to turn freely, and having a horizontal lever, I, attached i to its upper end, as shown clearly in rigs. Q'and 3.' The lower part b of the shaft H above the plate E is square, and the portion c above b is cylindrical, and has a screw-thread cut upon it, with a thumb-nut, J, tted thereon. On the square portion of the shaft H there is placed a slide, K, which is allowed to move freely up and down on b, and this slide is provided with two lateral projecting arms d fl, shown inv all the gures. The inner ends of the ropes C are passed between the arms Gr G and the concave beds a a,.and are clamped by means of the arms G Gr being pressed down by the arms d d, under the action of the nut J, as will be fully understood by referring to figs. 2 and l/Vhile the ropes C C are' thus clamped, the boat A may be suspended from the davits, the hooks of the davits passing through the rings B, and iu order to prevent the arms cl d of the slide K from turning olf the arms G G, a pin, L, is inserted through a hole, e, in one ofthe arms d' and G, as will be understood by referring to gs. 2 and 3. The boat thus suspended to the davits is lowered in the usual way, andjust before the boat reaches the water the pin L is withdrawn, and as soon as the boat touches the water an attendant turns the shaft H and thereby moves the arms ci 0l of the slide K off from the arms G G, and the ropes C C being thereby liberated both ends of the boat will be simultaneously detached from the davits.
This device may be constructed at a very moderate cost, and will operate in the most efficient manner.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-g The vertical shaft H, provided with the nut J, lever I, and the slide K, having lateral arms cl d, in combination with the arms G G, pivoted in the ears or lugs F F on the plate E, all arranged to operate in the manner substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 18th day of January, 1867.
JOHANN ARNOLD LIBBERTZ.
