Description

KENNEDY BROWN, QF GARDNER, ILLINOIS."
Latas- Para: No. 89,283, dated April 27,1869.
IIVIPROVEMENT IN NUT-LOCKS.
Tho Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sarna.
Be it known that I, KENNEDY BROWN, of the town of Gardner, county of Grundy, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Mode of Fastening together the ends of Iron Rails upon Railroads; and v hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon.
I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
- Take two iron rails, placed end to end, as at iig. 1, with iron straps passing along on each side of the rails, and passing the joint' between the two rails. These straps are attached to the rails by bolts passing through them, and through the rails, as represented at figs. 2 and 3.
The' head of the bolt rests upon a hard rubber ring, placed in a suitable recess to. receive it,.whvich ring acts as a rest for the bolt-head, and makes it practicable to tighten the nuts on the bolts, as hereinafter described.
The ends of the bolts are secured by nuts, which, after being screwed up against the straps aforesaid, are
prevented frornbecoming unscrewed by a nut-lock, represented .at-letter B, a description of which lock is as follows: ,l
It is a thin sheet or strap, made of iron, or other suitable material, of any required thickness, of which lock, and, by a key vpassing through the end of the bolt, the lock is held in place. l
I claim as my invention, the nut-lock represented at letter B, as and for the purpose above described.
KENNEDY BROWN. Witnesses:
