specimen-ion of Letters Patent,
Patented May 5, 1908.
Application led September 23. 1907. Serial No. 394,035.
To qll whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that l, ABRAHAM SrssELns, a citizen of the Lmted States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, haveA invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belts, of
which the following is a specification, such as will enable those Vskilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.
This invention relates to belts of the class worn by ladies and gentlemen, and the yobject thereof is this class, and of the form known as tubular belts, in which the belt is formed from asingle strip of leather or other suitable material folded longitudinallf.' lopposite so as to bring the side edges thereof together, said edges being'stitched or otherwise secured together. and the belt being flattened out so that the line of stitching b v which the sidel edges of the belt strap are secured together will be on the inner side of the belt; a further object being to provide a belt of this class in which the opposite sides, or front 'and back portions, of the belt are secured together without the use of gumming or sealing material, this result, in my improvement, being accomplished b v parallel rows of stitching which extend longitudinally of the belt and through the opposite sides or front and hack portions thereof, whereby said opposite sides or front and back portions of the belt are y secured together.
The invention is lowing specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of in v improvement are designated b v suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which made according to my invention. Fig. 2 an inside view on an enlarged scale of a part of the belt. Fig. 3 a cross section on the line 3, 3 Of Fig. and view of a part of'nrviniproved -belt on the same scale as l and showing additional stitching.
In the practice of my invention l form the belt a from a strip of flexible material, preferablv leather. and this strip is folded longi i y thereof brought together as shown at The edges of the strip of material are connected by zig Zag or lace stitches t, and at the same time two parallel rows of stitches b2 are formed which extend entirely through the belt orthrough to provide an improved belt of i fully disclosed in the fol-v Figure 1 is a perspective view of a belt Fig. el aback o r outside i 1 the opposite sides, or the front and back portions thereof. This operation is performed by means of a particularly designed machine of well Y known construction and E operation and in practice the said machine is provided with a. folder through which the strip of leather or other material is passed,- and this folder folds the strip, and the said strip is fed through the machine in the operation thereofand the stitches b and b2 are formed ata singleoperation.
'ith my improvement it is unnecessary to l paste the opposite sides of the belt together as the parallel rows of stitching b2 Will securely connect the opposite sides, or front i, and back portions of the belt, and if suffii ciently stiff, or heavy, material` is employed l the belt will be given the required firmness. l. In Fig. 4 I have shown a form of a belt, or i a part thereof in which supplemental lines of l stitching b3 are employed between the lines i, b2 and the edges of the l belt and these lines of stitching` b3 vmay to the edges of the belt if desired.
Although I have described my improved belt las formed in a particularl manner, and by means of a machine so constructed that it will fold the strip from which the-belt is made and form the stitches?) and b2, my invention is not necessarily limited to this particular 1 method of making the same, nor' the usel of any particular machine but consists in the belt made as described and hereinafter claimed.
The belt c, as shown is provided at one end with a. buckle c, and at the opposite side With eyelets d, by which the belt may be secured around the waist, but my invention is not limited to any particular means for connecting the ends of thebelt, and Suspenders and l other forms of straps may be made in the 1 same manner and within the scope of my ini vention.
Having fully described my invention, What l claim as new vand desire to secure by'Letters i, latcntisz l l.. A belt or strap composed of av strip Vof l flexible material folded longitudinally -to, l bring the side edges together, the meeting' edges beinCr connected by zigzag or lace stitching which extends across the same, and l the front and back portions or oppositesides of the belt being connected adjacent to said l interlocked with said be placed closely adjacent .2 ssegsae terial folded longitudinally to'l bring the slide side edges thereof and by tvhich the front and edges together, the .meeting edges being conback portions of the belt are connected. nected by zigzag or lace stitching which ex- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as tends across the same, and the frontand back my invention I have signed my name in "portions or opposite sides of the belt being presence of the subscribing Witnesses this 15 connected adjacent to said meeting edges b 20th day ofeptember 1907.
parallel rows of stitching interlocked Wit ABRAHAMSUSSELES. said zigzag or lace stitching, said belt being Witnesses:
also provided With supplemental parallel' '0. E. MULREANY;
rows of stitching adjacent to the opposite M. E. DooDY.
