IMPROVEMENT IN SEAMS FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.

My invention relates to an improved mode of forming Welts and stays for protecting the seams in bootsand shoes; and it consists in utilizing the single edges of a double. welt so as to make them serve as stays on the inside of the seam.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing my device. Fig. 2 is a section of the welt.
The seam to which this welt is applicable in the manufacture of boots and shoes is where two raw edges are to be united together. I11- stead of using a single thickness of leather to form the Welt, I take a strip, 0, of leather, cloth, or other material of which the welt is to be made, and fold it double lengthwise, and in applying it I place this doubled strip between the edges to be united, and sew it in place, so that its doubled edge will project slightly on the outside, While its single edges are on the inside of the seam. I then fold the single edges'of the stay-piece in opposite directions,
and sew them down by a row of stitches on each side of the welt, so that these inside edges will form a stay for the seam. An independent stay-piece, d, can be used, if desired, but when it is used I place it over the inside of the seam, after the edges of the staypiece have been folded back, and the same row of stitches that is used to fasten the edges of the stay-piece down will serve to secure both the independent stay-piece and the edges of the Welt-piece. I thus provide a doubled welt, which will not only be neat in appearance, but will project slightly above the cloth, and protect the stitches upon each side from the wear to which they are subjected by the friction of the lower edge of the dress of the wearer chafing over it, and at the same time the welt-piece forms a stay for the seam, both welt and stay being combined in the same piece or strip of leather.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
A combined welt and stay for the seams of boots and shoes, formed of the folded strip 0, and applied so that its doubled edge forms the welt, while its single edges form stays in the inside of the seam. substantially as and for the purpose described.
