Description

Patented Aug. 26, 1947 BELT Joseph Chianese, New York, N. Y., assignor to S. Froehlich Co., Inc., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application October 9, 1945, Serial No. 621,196
Claims.
This invention relates to wearing apparel and has particular reference to an improved belt in which longitudinal portions thereof are constructed for interfitting engagement for coupling the same together in belt formation.
The invention has in view a belt composed of plies fashioned from a length of material having opposite longitudinal portions thereof constructed for interfitting engagement whereby the portions may be doubled over in overlying relation with the medial portion of the material and interfitted for connecting the portions in belt formation.
More particularly the invention has for an object the provision of a belt fashioned from a unitary piece of material to provide opposite plies thereof, the rear ply being formed by interfitting longitudinal edge portions thereof and adhesively securing the same to the front ply.
With the foregoing and other objects in View reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment thereof.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a belt constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary inside face view of the strip from which the belt is produced.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary face view of the inner ply of the belt.
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on line 55 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the belt is fashioned from a strip of material In such as leather and the like which is of a length to constitute the over-all length of the belt together with the doubled portion providing the loop for securing the buckle or fastening device thereto and the same is of a width to form the inner and outer plies of the belt.
The strip I0 is formed along opposite longitudinal edges thereof with longitudinally spaced similar dovetailed notches II and longitudinally spaced similar dove-tailed projections l2 between adjacent notches, the notches l I along one longitudinal edge thereof being located opposite the dove-tailed projections l2 along the opposite longitudinal edge. The inner face of the strip I0 is skived to provide longitudinally extending recesses defined by inwardly declining longitudinal face portions I3 extending inwardly from opposite longitudinal edges thereof and outwardly declining longitudinally extending face por- 2 tions [4 respectively merging with the face portions [3 along the inner edges l5 thereof. The inner longitudinal edges l6 of the face portions 14 form the opposite or outer longitudinal edges of a longitudinally extending medial portion ll of relatively greater thickness than the longitu dinally skived portions at each side thereof and which medial portion H is formed with an inner face disposed parallel with the opposite or outer face [8 of the strip III.
In producing the belt from the strip H] the inner face thereof is coated with an adhesive such as rubber cement and the like and the opposite longitudinal edge portions are folded inwardly along the line [5 formed by the skiving of the said inner face to thereby dispose the opposite skived face portions 13 upon the skived face portions l4 and upon the inner face of the longitudinally extendin medial portion I! with the dove-tailed notches and projections H and I2 along one longitudinal edge thereof interfitting with the dove-tailed notches and projections II and I2 along the opposite longitudinal edge thereof. The longitudinal portion of the strip l0 between the lines l5 constitutes the outer ply I9 of the belt while the inturned and interfitted portions thereof constitute the inner ply 20 of the belt. After the strip It] is thus folded into belt formation pressure is applied to opposite faces thereof to compress the inner faces of the plies together and to set the opposite plies, the skiving of the inner face of the strip Ill functioning to form when the same is folded into belt formation the outer ply l9 with an arcuate shaped outer face in cross-section and the inner ply 20 with a substantially straight or plain outer face in cross-section.
The belt is provided with means for coupling the ends thereof together in endless formation such as a buckle 2| or other type of connecting means. The buckle is connected therewith by doubling over the end portion 22 of the belt which is secured in loop formation by stitching 23, the opposite end of the belt being provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings 24 for selective engagement by the buckle 2|.
What is claimed is:
1. In a belt, opposite longitudinally extending plies constructed from a strip of material having opposite longitudinal edge portions formed with longitudinally spaced dove-tailed notches and projections, said strip having one face thereof skived to provide longitudinally extending recesses defined by inwardly declining longitudinally extending face portions merging along the inner edges thereof respectively with outwardly declining longitudinally extending face portions, said strip being folded inwardly along said merging lines of said face portions to provide said opposite plies with the dove-tailed notches and projections along one edge thereof interfitted with the dove-tailed notches and projections in the opposite edge portion thereof.
2. In a belt, opposite longitudinally extending plies connected together at their outer edges, one of said plies consisting of opposite longitudinally extending portions having interfitted notches and projections coupling said portions together, said plies having their inner faces longitudinally skived adjacent their longitudinal edges with the longitudinally extending medial portion of the other of said plies relatively thicker than said skived portions and means cementing the inner faces of the opposite plies together whereby the outer face of the belt is retained in convex formation in cross-section.
3. In a belt, said belt including opposite longitudinally extending plies constructed from a strip of material having opposite longitudinal edge portions formed with longitudinally spaced dove-tailed notches and projections, said strip having one face thereof longitudinally skived adjacent the opposite longitudinal edges thereof, said strip being folded inwardly intermediate the longitudinally skivedportions to thereby provide said opposite plies, with the dove-tailed notches and projections along one longitudinal edge thereof interfitted with the dove-tailed notches and projections in the opposite longitudinal edge portion thereof and means cementing said opposite plies in adjacent relation.
4. In a belt, said belt including opposite 1ongitudinally extending plies constructed from a length of material having opposite longitudinal edge portions thereof formed with longitudigitudinally extending plies constructed from a strip of material having opposite longitudinal edge portions formed with longitudinally spaced notches and projections, said strip having one face thereof longitudinally skived adjacent the opposite longitudinal edges thereof, said strip being folded inwardly intermediate the longitudinally skived portions to thereby provide said opposite plies with the notches and projections along one longitudinal edge thereof interfitted with the notches and projections in the opposite longitudinal edge portion thereof and means cementing said opposite plies in adjacent relation.
