Description
MQRTO'N JUDD, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
v I Lette/rs Patent dIVe-...88,7 3, dated April 6, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these'Letters Patent and making part of the same.
4To all whom 'it may concer/n:
Be it known that I, Mon'roN J UDD, of the city and eountyof New Haven, and Stat-e 'of Connecticut, have invented and made a new and useful Improvement in Saslr-llastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of .the said invention, reference being had to the-annexed drawing,- making part of this specification, wherein- Figure l is an clevatibn of said fastener, as applied toV the sashes of a window, and
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of said fastener. Similar parts are denoted'by the same letters. rlhisinveution consists in a two-ended sash-fastener, ap lied to the parting-strip between the sashes, and ac ing to' prevent the lower sash being lifted, 'or thel upper sash drawn down, and when turned vertically, the said fastener' does not in any manner obstruct the free ymovement of the sashes.
1is fastening is especially intendeldyfor s ashes that are provided with cords and weights, and is employed to hold the sashes entirely closed, vor to prevent them being opened beyond a given point, thus allowing the window to he opened either at top or bottom, for the purpose of ventilation, and, at the same time, secure 'the sashes against` being moved suiciently for a burg.-
lar to-pass in.
Ln the drawing- (t represents the meeting-rail of the lower sash, and
b, a poltion'of the upper sash.:
c is`the parting-strip of tllewindow-frame, the same occupying the space between the edges of the sashes, and
(l is the stop-bead.
All are of any usual construction.'
My improved fastening is applied to the parting-strip c, and consists in a plate, e, that is to be let into said strip c, and attached by the slcrewsf, (see Iig. 2,) and upon the surface ot' this plate e, is a ring, t', that sets within a circular avty in the fastening-button g, so
as tofrelieve the central rivet h of strain.; and a helical spring, 2,- is placed inthe recess around this rivet h, so as to produce the friction that is necessary to prevent the button turning accidentally.y
lhe ends of this button y are hooked as :at 3, both ends being alike, or nearly so, in order that the fastening may be applied, either end upward t0' the parting-strip c.
The lower end of the button g, when it is turned, projects over the meeting-rail a, so that the. bottom sash cannot be raised, or can only be raised a small amount, allowed for by placing the fastening` at the desired point.
In the mullion of the upper sash b, a plate, o, is inserted; this, and the mullion at the same point,A being shown Vin section in fig. 1.
This plate o has a mortise in it, and the wood is to be removed behind this mortise, to -allow the hooked end of the button y to enter, and prevent the sash being moved in either direction.
This plate o maybe applied at such a point as to lock the upper sash when entirely closed, or when partially open, as shown in fig 1; or more than one plate` can be made `use of.
The red lines in iig. l, show the position of the button g when turned, so as not to interfere with the Vsashes sliding up or down.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pate ent is- .lhc turning-button g, provided with the hooked ends, and attached to the plate e, so as to belet into the parting-strip, and act as a fastening to the upper and lower sashes, as spccilied.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, this 17th day of February, 1869.
Y i MORTON J UDD. Witnesses:
OHAs. M. WILCOX, JULiUs Twrss.
